If I recall, Cameron used a gazillion models mixed with special effects. Most special effects now a days are just CGI alone. Models, though expensive, don't suffer from that horrible "look at me I'm CGI!" qualities that just irritate the fuck out of me.

Yeah, I believe you're correct. The models and replicas were really impressive (why yes, I have watched most of the behind-the-scenes stuff on the 3-disc set).

Awww, I love reading all the different views on this film and for me, like for many others, it's partly about the memories that one has with this film. I remember how great it was watching this film with my best friends (saw it only once at the theater) or later with my mother who didn't want to see this in a cinema because she was afraid she'd fall asleep. So I rented this as soon as it came out and watched it with her. She didn't fall asleep and absolutely loved it. My sisters and I watch this every few years together (usually around Christmas when everybody is home) and we all have different favourite parts (and my younger sisters doesn't really like it but still watches it with us). And yeah, the story brings the cheese I realize that but from time to time I need that.
What surprised me about some of the things written here is that a lot of people found that Leo looked too young and/or so much younger than Kate. I thought they were both supposed to be really young (wasn't Rose 17? She certainly behaved like a teenager). And looked the part. About James Cameron: he really must have been a nightmare to work with. I don't know how he behaved on other sets but I've heard so many terrible comments about him for this one. Even Ioan Gruffud who I guess was only there for a short time, once said that he was totally miserable because Cameron behaved so badly towards everyone. I do understand that there must have been a lot of pressure on him because of the budget and everything but still. What has he been up to since then? He hasn't made another movie, right? One more thing I just remembered but I'm not sure if I 'm making this up: wasn't this film supposed to be like the biggest failure in cinema history? Like nobody believed in it because it was the most expensive movie ever back then?

IRRC, the production delays and massive budget (which I think ended up somewhere around 200M) were causing quite a bit of anxiety. Everyone was predicting that it was going to be another Waterworld.

I heard Cameron made a lot of cracks about Kate's weight, and we all know at the time how sensitive she was about it. He also used to throw cell phones at people. One interesting thing-the guy who played J. J. Astor? Eric Braedon, who plays Victor on The Young and the Restless. And Captain Smith? None other than Bernard Hill, aka Theoden from Lord of the Rings. I have a confession-I have two posters of the movie in my room. What can I say-I LOVE the costumes. AND I own two "Rose" dolls-the one in the red and black beaded "jump" dress from Galoob, and the Franklin Mint vinyl doll-I have several outfits for her-right now, she's wearing the blue velvet "flying" outfit. I also know a woman who makes movie costumes, who's made some GORGEOUS reproductions of the Titanic costumes. Someday...

Russell Crowe and James Cameron need to make a movie together. The hurling of telecommunication devices at each other would be legendary.

Guinastasia, those costumes are absolutely beautiful. I wish I could buy one - I would have an amazing Halloween costume every year. Hell, I'd wear any of Rose's gowns around my house.

He's done mostly documentaries since then, generally relating to Titanic or other nautical mysteries. He has two huge movies in pre-production though - Battle Angel and Avatar. They're both mega-budget sci-fi epics. It would be funny to see James Cameron try to make a low budget indie.
Interesting to note that he's only directed a total of seven proper films. Piranha II, Terminator 1 & 2, Aliens, The Abyss, True Lies, and Titanic.
