Isn't Kate Oxbridge? I could have sworn I've read that... Emma Thompson is, not Kate. Kate never went beyond O/A levels at school. Actually, I'm just assuming she took her A-levels. All I know is that she went to Redroofs. It's hardly Roedean.

Emma was a close friend to Kate as well as a mother figure, and she saw Kate doing something harmful to herself. I think she had an obligation to speak up.
That's true, but if there was any overlap between the new relationship with Mendes and the marriage, it couldn't have been more than a few weeks. They met when he was casting a play in August or September, and she officially announced her divorce in early September. I don't think Mendes jumped in and busted up her marriage in two weeks.

I was under the impression that Kate and Jim had been having problems (and Kate had done the usual round of interviews proclaiming that she had a wonderful relationship that were published right before they split) for a while before they announced the split. I guess Sam might have been the final, final nail in the coffin. If she had moved on, there isn't much point in trying to save the relationship and they could just call it quits legally and work on getting along for the sake of their child.
Although their academic backgrounds are different, Kate and Sam have, imo, a lot in common. They are both extremely talented and great at what they do, and they both had almost instant success in a very tough field. I mean, Sam starts directing plays and is an instant critical darling and Kate knocks one out of the park in Heavenly Creatures and never really looked back. I remember being a little puzzled when they got together because he does seem quite cerebral and Kate has this image of being a very spirited, heart-felt person (going after roles with gusto and going with her gut instinct where projects are concerned) and I always wondered what they had in common. I think they are very similarly driven and focused and I think their careers are extremely important to them. I think they are on similar wavelengths and that makes up for a lot of differences.

I think they are very similarly driven and focused and I think their careers are extremely important to them. I think they are on similar wavelengths and that makes up for a lot of differences. They both achieved success at a young age. So yeah, I think they have that in common. Also, I've mentioned this earlier in a few posts before, but her ex Jim's grandfather blurted out to the tabs that one of the main reasons why there marriage got turbulent was because he felt overshadowed by her success. To Kate's credit, she did reportedly try to make the marriage work - she took a year off work following the wedding, and took supporting roles (Quills, Enigma). I think her first marriage was shakier than she had made it out to be (insecure Kate, of course, always tries to concoct this image of perfection). That said, it doesn't excuse Kate from deciding to marry a douche bag though... I understand why she would like to marry a person of her par - so to speak, after the crumbling of a marriage with an AD. But she could've married anyone more successful and less douchey. Emma Thompson is, not Kate. Kate never went beyond O/A levels at school. Actually, I'm just assuming she took her A-levels. All I know is that she went to Redroofs. It's hardly Roedean. Yeah, she's totally uneducated (contradicting her professional facade - association with literary film adaptations and "higher brow" filmmakers like Phil Kaufman, Campion, and Winterbottom). On a sorta related topic, Mendes' ex, Oxbridge alum Rachel Weisz also annoys me with her pretense. I HATE, HATE that comment she said about being pleasantly surprised that she actually snatched herself a smart American. Get off the high horse, plz?!

Rachel Weisz and Kate look like sisters so it's interesting that they both have Sam Mendes in common.

*re-reading past posts* I remember reading that he threw a hissyfit when he wasn't allowed in Harrod's because he was dressed rather sloppy and pulled the, "Hell, don't you know who I AM!" shit, because at the time, there were ads in the window for Titanic. Oooh, ooh.. I do remember reading about that incident. It was hilarious, considering that he was just the hubby of a movie stah. I still like Kate and all, but damn, that girl has a thing for douches.

Heh. I realize now that I misread the original post and thought that it was KATE who pulled the "Don't you know who I am?" thing because SHE was on the poster and could just point to her own face. I thought that was pretty funny, but realizing that it was her then husband puts a different spin on the matter. It isn't quite as funny when you are trying to get special treatment because your wife is a big star. Boo!

She's getting decent reviews in Britain (largely of the "one bright spot" variety) for Romance and Cigarettes: There's a clip of her in the movie, uh, with James Gandolfini(which is NOT for you if you're at work...unless you have headphones) at the Sun's website.

I can't wait for Little Children with these two! And doesn't Kate look pretty in these new pics? Sorry, I'm a total fangirl when it comes to Kate Winslet . There is already a lot of Oscar buzz for her various upcoming movies and I don't like this. It's way too early and reminds me of 2004 when everybody predicted her for either Eternal Sunshine or Finding Neverland. Early buzz, a nom but hardly ever a frontrunner, that's what happened. And now the same thing seems to be happening again. I want her to win a Best Actress Award so badly, though I know that at this stage in her career she doesn't even need that anymore. She's a respected actress with critically acclaimed movies and she is the star of the highest grossing movie of all time (er, Titanic is still at no.1, isn't it?). Oh, and in Premiere Magazine's Today's Best Actress poll thingy she's behind Oscar winners Streep and Kidman but way ahead of all the recent Oscar winners Fishstick, Reese, Cate, Hilary, Renee, Charlize and even Jodie. Ha, take that, AMPAS! ETA: woohoo, 500th post! ;D

Don't worry. Even if she never does get one, she'll be in good company - Cary Grant and Peter O'Toole are just two examples of people who never won Oscars.
