I think his characters could (maybe?) come across as rich/interesting if you have no context, no back story, etc. Knowing what I know about this gross man it makes my skin crawl now to watch his films. His female characters are so often so obviously one of three stock characters in his life: 1- crazy vindictive evil bitch who can barely keep it together (his idea of Mia). 2- Young (always young, so young) ingenue whose only real defining feature is her love for him (or his stand in character), and her ability to prance around in underwear. (Soon yi, or, I presume, his view of any young childlike woman in his life) 3- The rare time (it's very rare) he combines the eccentric and neurotic with the ingenue. They still always dote over/admire him in some pathetic way.
It's gross, and if you scratch the surface it's not any deep meaningful portrayal of women. It's Woody Allen projecting his sickness on film.
Kate Winslet is officially on my shit list. She can go straight to hell.

She just will not let this go will she? I hope this ends her career. I've found her overrated and even more awards hungry than Leo for years. She finally got her (undeserved) Oscar, so why is she still out here tap dancing for one? And caping for a pedophile no less. Just stop. I haven't considered her a credible actress in years. Almost all her roles in the past 10 years have been overblown scenery chewing trainwreck Oscar bait. I'm going to try and remember her from Sense and Sensibility and act like her career ended after that. Yes, even Titanic. Most.overrated.movie.ever. You may cast your stones now.

Annie Hall is pretty much Woody Allen with boobs; it is his stock character as played by a woman. No wonder Hollywood, at the time when Allen was a white-hot commodity, gave him so many accolades for a movie about himself in drag.

It's surprising how people's love for Kate has died. But then she named her child Bear Blaze, rewrote her own history*, and comes out with crap like that about Woody Allen. WTH are you smoking, Kate?
*She claimed all 3 of her kids have the surname Winslet when she announced Bear Blaze won't have the surname Rocknroll. (Probably because Bear Blaze is daft enough on its own.)

I knew when she married a man whose last name was Rocknroll, there was something seriously wrong with her judgment and decision making skills.

I just said Bear Blaze with both last names and also came to the conclusion that it's better with Rocknroll.

Leaving aside my disgust for him for a moment, I think Woody's female characters stand out because the general Hollywood landscape for female characters is so abysmal. I'm in the camp where there are female characters I've enjoyed in his films, but some of that is coming from an incredibly low bar -- he often creates female characters who are active and whose internal decisions actually drive the plot. When I think back on films of his that I've seen, it tends to be the female characters I remember and not the men. Even if they are negative portrayals otherwise, an active, story-driving female character can still feel refreshing compared to the passive girlfriend/damsel/mom roles that really serve as little more than wallpaper to the story.
It may simply be that he's traded one set of female archetypes (mom/damsel) for a slightly less common set (neurotic/ingénue) that shine because of their relative novelty. If we had a filmmaking industry where female storytellers were responsible for 50% of what comes out, or even where female characters got to speak more than 27% of dialogue in major movies, would Woody's female characters particularly stand out? I don't think they would.
As for Kate Winslet, fuck her. "On some level he is a woman" is a disgusting thing to say about someone who is a known predator of young girls. There is no reason why she should be so eager to work with and cape for this predator. Let alone on Wonder Wheel, with its plot about a dude who's interested in his girlfriend's daughter. How does the reality subtext of that not absolutely turn your stomach?

I’m glad I didn’t see this before I went to the Titanic 3D revival, because I was still able to enjoy the film. I’ve been able to separate her performance from her persona, but I think this statement is pushing her onto my personal Tom Cruise list.
