I thought it kind of stunk. Take the worst parts of the show and magnify them by 10. The good parts weren't good enough to save the film because it was WAY too long. It just felt SO fake and schmaltzy. I giggled a few times and loved the clothes, but all in all, I wish they never made the movie.

I haven't seen it yet, but Entertainment Weekly and the NY Times review more or less spoiled it if you read between the lines- I think Big leaves Carrie at the altar, and then the girls go on vacation to Mexico. I'm glad you included the spoiler. You saved me $7.25. I can tolerate them for 30 minutes, but 240 minutes? Hell, that's as long as Atonement. How was JHud as the "sassy black assistant?" Good or a waste of time?

NO!!! 140 minutes!!! 240 minutes and I would have lost all will to live. I thought Jennifer Hudson's character was pretty pointless. I get where they were trying to go with her--as a symbol of Carrie and the girl's old romantic idealism, but still... no. WAY too hokey, and she deserved better.

Oops, my bad! Typo!
Thanks for the take on that and JHud's role.

I'll actually see it tomorrow morning (early bird special). Someone spoiled the film's entire plot over at Wikipedia. I read it the other day. I'm not sure how accurate it is, but it's probably pretty close.

Someone at Wiki gave the entire damn thing away. Wow. That won't keep people away though. Wonder how it will do.

Brookie, I wonder the same thing too. The film's reviews I've read have been a mixed bag.
I haven't been to a movie (theater-wise) in ages. I'm not sure why I picked this one. I enjoyed the TV series. A coworker is seeing it tomorrow. We both agreed that this should have been an HBO tv film rather than a theatrical release.
I think the film will do fine. Maybe in 2nd or 3rd place? I am thinking that Indiana Jones will remain in 1st place again this weekend.

After having some time to think about it today, I realized two things that really bothered me. They are not pivotal plot points, just details really, but being a big fan of the show, this just irked me and seemed to betray the characters:
1) Why would Carrie choose Samantha as her maid of honor and not Miranda? I ALWAYS got the feeling that Miranda was her best friend. That really disappointed me for some reason.
2) When Miranda finally confessed to Carrie that she said that thing to Big, that they were "crazy to get married" (at the rehearsal dinner), and that may have been what set him off---UGH. I could see Carrie getting upset at Miranda at first for sitting on that for so long, but she never acknowledged that Big's cold feet had nothing to do with what Miranda said and it would have happened regardless. Even Charlotte said that when Miranda told her what happened (the day the wedding was supposed to happen).
I guess overall my problem is that for a show that is supposed to celebrate female friendship (that's what I used to get out of it anyway), there seemed to be very little of that, and way too much product placement, label whoring, and man chasing at the expense of everything else. Disappointing and sad.
ETA: I just got home and am watching a few eppys from Season 6 on HBO On Demand to make myself feel better. It's probably my least favorite season (along with S5) but STILL trumps the movie by a long shot.

Wow, I just got home and really, really loved it. Do we still have to spoiler stuff? Well, just in case. I wanted to respond to your points, Clementine74:
1 - That suprised me, too. I also would have thought she'd pick Miranda. Maybe because Samantha was the only non-married one so she could technically be a "maid" of honor?
2 - I guess I just figured Carrie was in such a state of shock and distress that she couldn't be rational about what Miranda was saying. She needed an explanation and it was easy to lash out.
I will say I really wasn't ready for the fact that Big & Carrie got back together - and married - so fast. I think we all kind of figured they might get back together, but it seemed to come up really fast in the film, and I wasn't quite ready for it.
It didn't bother me that Charlotte got pregnant, because I actually have heard of a lot of couples who have trouble conceiving and suddenly do once they decide to adopt
But again, I really loved the movie. i was crying within the first 5 minutes with the flashbacks to the TV show. I squee'd a lot - may have had to do with the fact that my sister and I had 3 glasses of champagne and a Cosmo between us during the movie. Yay for theaters that serve alcohol. It didn't seem too long to me at all. If anything, I wish it hadn't ended!

Maybe I would have liked it more if I could have had a few drinks during! That sounds fantastic! I also went alone, because my friends were being wishy-washy about getting it all together. I started to get annoyed and now I'm kind of glad I just got it over with. I will say however, that I did feel those twinges of nostalgia as well, it was impossible not to.
Amazingly, I think Kim Catrall/Samantha was my favorite in the movie--funny because she was my least favorite on the show. I thought she came off really, really well and had the best lines.
