Did anyone see the interview where Cho subtley slammed Benedict's whitewash Khan casting? They were asking everyone who their favorite movie character was and he said and I quote "Ricardo Montalban as Khan kicked ass. He was also a person of color I might add" cue to nervous laughter. Unbelievable that Star Trek of all franchises would whitewash a major character like that.

I saw that, though I don't know if I would call it Benedict's whitewashing. He didn't know the name of his character until after he signed the dotted line. I wonder why JJ and Co decided to call the character Khan when they could have called him anything they wanted.

Well not Benedict's doing, but JJ and the other persons involved with the casting. Wtf with the casting. Huge role for a person of color and of course it has to get screwed up somehow.

I didn't know most people defined Khan in a racial way. I just thought Ricardo was an actor playing a role. Did a great job too! I think it was a little low of Cho to make that remark. I do see his point somewhat, but I'm not sure if the criticism is valid for this character. And it's not like Star Trek doesn't have a diverse cast: Colombian, black, Asian, Russia, british, women, gay, straight, romulans, men, american, vulcans, klingons, etc.
yes, I am a geek!

The point I saw made regarding Khan is that he is one of very few multifaceted villains who was a character of color. Generally, if there's a sort of admirable villain – brilliant, good back story, etc. – that role is given to a white person. So Khan, who is actually a superman, being played by a man who isn't white, is significant and important. I'm glad John Cho said that. There are a lot of things JJ Abrams does right with the series, but sometimes he really makes me side-eye him. Hopefully he's not involved with the trailers, which from what I've seen are all "explosions, guys fighting, girls in bed, Alice Eve screaming in her underwear, more explosions, manpain."

I saw this last night... and oh boy. I am going to be very interested in the reaction from serious Star Trek fans.

Well, it works well as a blockbuster, I'll give it that, and it's pretty funny. I'll spoil tag my other comments just in case. {Spoiler}I think the use of Khan, especially so specifically referencing Wrath of Khan, was pretty problematic. Plus, they really cut down on the crew camraderie which I really thought sold the first movie.
