Saw it on Friday and I agree with the consensus here--it was great! My only quibble was that I thought Idris Elba could have been used better/more, but otherwise I really enjoyed it. The cast members all have such great chemistry, Jaylah was great, and it mostly felt like a really long episode which I thought was perfect. I really appreciated that Sulu and his husband got a lingering close-up rather than it just being a 'blink and you'll miss it but look how progressive we are!' kind of thing. Also Kirk on the motorcycle was a perfectly executed bit of self-aware cheese, I thought.

I liked it a lot, I have become a big fan of the new series. The score is absolutely gorgeous. There were sighs and sniffs and sad murmurs when the two dedications to Nimoy and Anton came onscreen. I admit that I teared up. I started to tear up right at the end (during the final voiceover that Spoiler
combined the voices of all of the main characters saying "space: the final frontier..."), then the tears really fell when the dedications to Leonard and Anton came up. I loved the first in the reboot, and was "meh" on Into Darkness--especially Cumberbund as Not!Khan. This one was way better--great stuff for every character to do, and touched on some very topical themes. Idris Elba was a compelling villain and Jaylah was lots of fun. |

We want to see it and it is nice to read the good reviews here especially because the very first trailer they released just looked so cheesy.

Glad to know it's good, because the trailer looked awful. I don't know who does Paramount's trailers but they suck.

I would say that Karl Urban always looks hot but he shaved his head recently and he's not looking so hot.
One of my fave celeb encounters-- I ran into Karl at the WeHo Target at 8a on a Sunday morning back in 2008. He was SMOKIN'.
