Watched this last night. Just like with the 2009 film, which was my first ever Star Trek anything, I liked it but didn't love it. Its saving grace was once again the fantastic chemistry between Pine and Quinto. Spock is so cute! ;-) Oh and I know now that I can't find Chris Pine attractive. His big forehead and big blue eyes give him a baby-ish look.

Has anyone seen the new installment yet? I have no memory of seeing the Wrath of Khan one but Mr Cho swore we deffo saw it. We see only one or two movies a year in the theatre so this is kind of troubling--either I need to brush up my memory or it was that forgettable.

I just saw Beyond and liked it a lot. Justin Lin should teach seminars on how to handle a major death in your cast. There were some lines that were clear nods to Leonard Nimoy that took on a little bit of added resonance with Anton Yelchin's passing as well. Whatever flaws the movie can be accused of, not paying respect to the source material isn't one of them. They clearly knew they were making the 50-year anniversary movie and included some very nice moments, as well as plenty of Easter eggs for the longtime Trekkies.
Plotwise, it truly felt like an original series episode with an enormous budget. There were some moments of ridiculousness, but ridiculousness that was pretty well in keeping with some of the off-the-wall things that would've happened on the show. The crew was showcased nicely, and reports that Spock & Bones stole the show are absolutely correct, Urban & Quinto were wonderful. I liked it, I don't know if I fully loved it, but either way I think it had a bright, wonderful spirit that was sorely missing from Into Darkness.

A big stamp of approval from the CTG household!

I liked it a lot, I have become a big fan of the new series. The score is absolutely gorgeous.
There were sighs and sniffs and sad murmurs when the two dedications to Nimoy and Anton came onscreen. I admit that I teared up.

I enjoyed it. My only real complaint is that the cast spent so much of the movie separated from each other. That being said, every scene with Spock & Bones was freaking awesome. And I know it was cheesy as all hell but I LOVED the usage of "Sabotage."
I also teared up a bit when the tributes to Leonard & Anton came up. The powers that be have said that Chekov will not be recast which I think is a good thing, it would've just been wrong have someone else in the role. I just wonder how they'll write him out.

Definitely a movie that I'll be going to see again. I really enjoyed it, so much more than I did Into Darkness. Idris was 1000X better bad guy then Cumberbatch and the balance between humour and drama was just right for me.

In the original series movies, Chekov ended up getting promoted to first officer of another ship -- I think that would probably be the best way to handle it here. It would be a nod to continuity and also a nice, respectful way to treat the character.

It was a pretty great all around, but it was so hard to see AY. When I saw the For Anton on the screen I had trouble finding my way out through the tears.
I loved, loved, loved that Jayla was able to do all she did, and that she wasn't "sexy". Yay for girls that can fix stuff, defend themselves, and don't have to wear tiny outfits!!! Thanks to the person(s) who wrote her that way!!!

Thanks to the person(s) who wrote her that way!!! That would be Simon Pegg and Doug Jung (who also played Sulu's husband.) Pegg has said that they based her on Jennifer Lawrence's character in Winter's Bone (which is an awesome movie that everyone should see.) That's why she's named Jaylah, it's a play on J-Law.
