I'd much rather be reading about Renee's latest acting project, as opposed to her appearance. OT: {snip} If I were ever asked by a relative stranger about why I look the way I do, I'd probably give an evasive, BS-type answer too. I'm blessed with a fabulous head of curly blonde hair. I can't even tell you the number of people who come up to me and ask me if it's natural (curl and color). You want to compliment my hair, fine, but if it's natural? How is this your business?

I actually think she looks great. I didn't have a problem recognizing her last year when she first did it, or now. So yeah there's my take. /Kanye Shrug

I think she looks generic amd unlike her former self, whom I always thought was attractive and unique. Now she's neither. But what makes her look worse in the recent picture and adds at least 10 years to her age is that awful tan. She has always had white porcelain skin which added to her attractiveness. More than her eyes, which yes, make her look strikingly different, the worse offender is that housewives of orange county tan.
I am also dissapointed in the way she handled the reaction to her new face. I can understand it bothers her because she's such a private person but at the same time, she's not being truthful either and that's dissapointing. She doesn't owe us the truth and it would have been fine and her own right to remain silent but since she decided to comment, I'm not going to pretend that I believe her. But she's finally happy and hopefully whatever is making her happy lasts for a long time because I do like her.

I was totally with the author until she asserts that this isn't what Hollywood does to women, but what 'women do to women.' Actually, this is what living in a patriarchy does to women. Being taught that all we're worth is how attractive we are is not a female creation, nor is the archetype of the catty woman. They're the outputs of a sexist society. Blaming women for this is reductive and sort of missing the point.

I do think that women adopt the "not me" psychological security defense model and will criticize other women as a means of shoring up their own self-esteem. Ruling out Hollywood/patriarchy definitely diminishes the author's argument, but I don't see it as mutually exclusive blame.

I get complete strangers asking me my race. Not only that, but people will argue with me about it. " Are you sure you're not [whatever notion they had]?"

I agree with that and think she would have done well to take it a step further and recognize the fault ultimately lies with the social mores which cause that type of behavior in the first place, but I found it pretty insightful otherwise, so I figured I would share.

Russell Brand jumps into the fray and pretty much eviscerates anyone spending time on the subject of Renee's face. I love this guy, he's as intelligent as he is hilarious.

I agree- except- I don't ;p Yes, her eyes, her appearance, does not contain her essence, her being, her personhood. But that's not what we are talking about.
We are talking about her as a celebrity, not as my BFF. As a celebrity, as someone who is walking red carpets and (trying to) star in movies, then yes- her appearance does matter.
And on a celebrity gossip forum that is what (I will speak for myself only… ;p) we come on here for- to snark on celebrities. I don't come here to verify her essence and acknowledge her connection to a higher power. Now, if she came out and wanted to talk about her internal being in some article or something I may come here and post about it. But I will also post about it when she (or any celeb) shows up to an event looking high (LaBeouf), looking sullen (K. Stew), acting pretentious (Bland Lively), etc… and if they show up with a new face… yes… I will say something (and it's not likely to be:Good for you!!)
