I'm a big fan of Buffy, but even I am sometimes scared of the more obsessive fans. I posted above how some people cannot seperate the actor from the character, or believe that certain aspects of the character MUST be the actors real personality.
Just like the CMJ fans they have double standards and are totaly unable to see thet they are behaving in a way that they happily critisize in others. Reading some of the posts at the MJ fan club and they all talk about what Michael believes, what he's feeling, why he does this or that, what a fantastic guy he is and why he could NEVER do anything bad. But one post says Michael is "obviously" troubled and suddenly they're all "How can you say that without knowing him?", "You've never met him how can you tell?", "You can't make asumptions like that from just reading about him" and so on.
On one Buffy site there are hundreds of screen captures from the show and at the bottom of the page is "Warning. I made these screen caps. Do NOT take them and use them on your website." So they're happy to steal images from a TV show but once they've done that they're not THEIR images and no one must even THINK of stealing them from THEM!
The whole 'Con' thing puzzles me as well. Never been to one and cannot see the attraction of meeting a celeb for four seconds while he/she puts a squiggle on a photograph for you before a minder drags you out of the way for the next guy. And paying $100 for the experience.
And some of the stuff you read on the net... No wonder stars have panic rooms!

Ah, yes, "Fans of Moving the Hell On" were my idols for a while.
Oh, word. Because...yeah. See every single post in this thread for elaboration. Being paranoid about security is one thing I will never knock a celebrity for. Especially because even the fans who seem on the mundane side can still be scary-obsessive. For instance:
This is hysterical...but at the same time, I don't think the fan who is desperately clutching at his/her precious screencaps is someone I'd be exactly comfortable having in my home, you know?

Upthread, insane fans of Courtney Love were mentioned. I should say, for the sake of balance, that there are also some insane Courtney Love haters, and they're often insane fans of Nirvana and Kurt Cobain in particular. An example I saw was of this one girl who insisted that she was married to the spirit of Kurt Cobain (she has more than one livejournal, but they're all friendslocked - and she gave him a journal too!). She would be quite violent of the subject of Cobain's widow, and would refuse to believe that Love had not murdered him herself. My opinion of that is that it is not the business of random fans to say whether a verdict of suicide is incorrect - if Cobain's family and friends thought there was something iffy about it, it would be their business first. But then again, since she is married to his spirit, she can count herself in that group

I'm waiting for (dreading) the next time a celeb gets shot. You can guarantee that the nutter will have a history of posting on the net and you KNOW the media and all kinds of pressure groups will then be screaming that all posting boards should be banned, the internet is evil and so on.
When Hinkley and Chapman shot Reagan and Lennon the internet had not even been invented, but if they had acted today the internet would get the blame for warping their "fragile little minds" (TM Eric Cartman).
There have always been disturbed people, only now they can put all their craziness out there for millions of people to see.
Thanks God the potato people who live behind my sofa and talk to me when I sleep keep me sane.

Ah, yes, "Fans of Moving the Hell On" were my idols for a while. Man, if there was one banner I wish I could have contributed money towards, it would have been that one. Well, either that or "Seriously. Monkey." But if we're talking Crazy Fandom, there is nothing that compares to the Great LOTR Scam. I mean, this one has everything...crazy people, credit card scams, someone pretending to be Elijah Wood's cousin (and getting away with it!), and much, much more. I was actually introduced to this special brand of crazy through this thread on The Other Board, so I thought it would be nice to bring it up again.

Holy crap, MostlyHarmless, I've never thought of it like this before. You are so right. Oh, that's going to be unpleasant.
Looking back through these posts, I'm really glad I got my obsessive fan antics out of my brain mostly before the advent of the Internet, and I'm glad it took me forever to figure out how to post on message boards. (You can stop chucking, now; I'm not stupid or technophobic, just lazy.)
I just barely missed out on the opportunity to contribute money toward the ad TWoP's "24" forum made in tongue-in-cheek praise of the banner the "Moving the Hell On" posters created: "We know he's gone, we know he's not coming back, but Kiefer says we can have all the time we need, so back off! --Fans of George Mason." What was I just posting about how scary obsessional fans can be?

Every once in a while I would read the SMG or Buffy thread at Fametracker and it always amazed me how people really got into the whole thing. I never even watched a minute of Buffy in my entire life and I don't even have a clue who all of this people are but it sure was hella funny to read about it. It was kind of like the Delta Goodrem thread, I didn't know any of the people involved in the whole drama but it was nevertheless kinda interesting to read about what's gonna happen next.
So what's the scoop, fans bought a banner at TwoP to let the word know how upset they were about the Willow and Tara break-up (they did break-up right? Or did one of them die? See, no clue over here about that show)

I am so happy the Star Wars movie is opening this year, so Triumph the Insult Comic Dog can interview the fans waiting in line. Watching him crack jokes about them was one of the funniest things I've ever seen. A Lord of the Rings fan and Star Trek fan showed up and mocked them.
I don't get the Alias, Buffy, Angel,24 or West Wing fandom.
Some of Michael Jackson's fans think he's part angel but they dispute what exact percentage.

It was part of the same ad.
The time line of the banner ad wars went like this:
People upset that Tara had been killed on the show bought a banner ad that had pictures of Tara and Willow and it said something like "They are the magic. Until she (Tara) comes back, we won't be back. Signed Fans of Tara and Willow."
So, another group bought an ad that said "Tara's dead. Get over it. Seriously. (a picture of a monkey used from a preious ad was placed next to the word "Seriously" and thus the phrase "Seriously. Monkey." was born.). Signed, Fans of Moving the Hell On."
Then other people started riffing on it and I think the Tara/Willow people posted in the Ad Comment thread about how homophobic the response ad was and all hell broke loose until Glark was forced to ban all ads that looked even remotely like the Willow/Tara ad.
A group I always have problems with are certain Josh/Donna shippers on The West Wing. Good lord, suggest to them that Josh and Donna are not meant to be and watch the fireworks fly. It's all so obvious. And a lot of them are way too invested in Donna/Janel Maloney and have over-identified with her. Make a crack about her lack of formal education or post that perhaps Janel's not that attractive and that the character of Donna is boring, insipid and better off as a tertiary character and they act like you've tried to kill their best friend.

I don't get it either especially Alias and 24. Eliza Dushku also commented on Buffy fans being crazy and obsessed with SMG. Does anyone remember when some Buffy fans wanted to kidnapp Freddy Prinze Jr? Some of her fans felt he would interfere with Buffy or something like that.
The Marcy and Al fans of One Life to Live are also nutty. They were so upset about the guy who played Al getting fired they sent letters and marcal toliet tissue to ABC. They wrote on the rolls "Marcy + Al =Marcal". It worked he's been back on the show and they reinvented him as Michael so it's still Marcal .
