Rising film director Jordan Walker-Pearlman who directed the upcoming Gabrielle Union/Billy D. Williams movie Constellation, initially had me confused about his race. The subject matter and his comfort level with his mostly black cast in his film The Visit, caused me to assume that he was was African American. Then, after seeing a photo of him at a movie premiere and reading trivia from his IMDB bio that said he was actor Gene Wilder's nephew, I thought, well of course, he's white and Jewish. But then I read a list of past black nominees at the Independent Spirit awards that listed his name and soon after that, I found out that he's also the grandson of famous Harlem child welfare advocate, Adele Walker. That's when it finally dawned on me that he's biracial but simply looks white. Which parent is which is still unclear. I don't know if he 's the son of Gene Wilder's sister or brother because Wilder's real family name is Silberman, not Pearlman. I don't know where the Pearlman comes in.

Poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning's family hailed from Jamaica and there was speculation that she had black ancestry, which may be why her dad opposed her marrying Robert Browning. If she had had kids, they may have been noticeably black and the jig would have been up for the Brownings.

I think you might be referring to Meg Tilly. She and her sister are so obviously half Asian that's it pathetic of her to try to tip-toe around it. Meg was always the one who would say everything about her upbringing except her race.
See, now, I didn't know this.

You're right. I meant Meg. Rumor has it that Dorothy Lamour, a huge star in the 40s, had black ancestry. Dorothy being from New Orleans, I wouldn't be surprised.

Maybe I am naive but it would seem highly likely that in certain parts of the country, most Caucasian identifying people would have some black ancestry.

Especially in New Orleans, where interracial marriages and race mixing has been going on for generations.

Anyway, this is a good history link and lists some celebs and historical figures. And yes, Ben Harper is bi-racial, white mother/black father and the father of Laura Dern's children. He and Lenny Kravitz could be brothers, they have always looked so much alike to me esp. since Lenny lost the locks. Hope I did that link right ETA: Almost, you forgot the last / in the ending url]. Thanks Topher for fixing that -- You Rock!

He's also half Venezuelan.. making her hispanic.. I've never heard her mention this. I thought that he was a black Venezuelan/black hispanic? (Venezuela abolished slavery in 1854 and they never outlawed intermarriage like the US -- according to my handy copy of Africana) I was also under the impression that Sammy Davis Jr.'s Puerto Rican parent(discussed earlier) was black as well? Or at least what would be considered black in the US. IIRC, I haven't seen where she's mentioned it either.

Oh, I heard her mentioned the Venezeulan part on good old Radio Scope, but she never uttered the word black.
My black-dar says that pappy was a home grown black man, if not my black-dar than just by looking at her last name, Carey.
Now, I know I'm going to hear from someone, who is going to tell me that not all Hispanics have Spanish sirnames. I'm just going to go on my hunch.
Another celeb, I would like to know their heritage is Pete Sampras. My first instinct is middle eastern. Anyone know for sure?
