I always liked this thread Over There... maybe because it helped reassure me that we were... different. Home of Celine! Shania! The Kief! Sam Bee! Keanu! (The 'reverse cool' list, if you will). Half the comedians in Hollywood! Stand tall! Stand proud!
CANADA! F**K YEAH!!! (eh?)
ps. Please can I have my hockey back?

Well, if we can't have hockey back, at least we can Roll Up The Rim.
And yes, I always like to feel that we're different than Americans. North American culture (if there is such a thing) has become so homogenized, sometimes it's nearly impossible to tell where one ends and the other begins.

Yes... but would we have heard of these people if they hadn't made it so big in the US?
I remember seeing Jim Carry before he hit it big in the States and maybe BNL... but the rest pretty much had to go there to get work and for us to notice them...

Loved the movie Canadian Bacon, with it's "They walk among us" list of famous Canadians and the fine for not writing graffiti in both languages is CDN$1000 or "US$14"
I wonder whatever became of the writer....?

Wow, someone actually still cares about the NHL? I stopped that business about 5 years ago - it's just the international tourney's I'm interested in now (the Olympic gold was the last time I sobbed with happiness - and no, I'm not ashamed).
I dunno about being happy when there's 'proof' we're different from the Americans. It always smacks of Possible Massive National Inferiority Complex to me. It makes me cringe how the CBC (and other media) go so nutty everytime someone in the US mentions/neglects to mention us. Like when, post 9/11 Bush forgot to mention us in the list of countries he thanked for helping out. And the media here was so very, very *offended* and shrill about it. I mean, c'mon - we know what we did, and the people involved on the day, the people in the planes we let land at our airports, know what Canada did. It's embarassing to me to have this unseemly clamouring for attention from our big bad Daddy America. We helped out cuz we're Canadian and that's what we tend to do and we don't need f***ing George Bush to acknowledge it in order for it to be real.
Sorry...rant!

I'm liking the no hockey thing. Hope it happens again next year. It's not like the players are reduced to roughing up kids for their lunch money.

You guys are evil. If there is no hockey next year I will die. I'm a huge hockey fan and currently the local WHL team is in a 20-something game losing streak. I am in pain! I need the NHL or I will explode.

I am really enjoying watching movies Saturday Nights instead of Hockey.
PS Do we really have to include Celine as Canadian?

I'm loving the no-hockey thing, too! Unfortunately, some business are really suffering because of it... but quite honestly, I never even noticed it was gone... ETA - does ANYONE actually watch Corner Gas or the one with the people on the Go-train?

Hey, if we have to claim Brandine and Cletus, Mariah Carey, Whitney "Crack Ho"uston and Crazy Michael Jackson, then hell yes you have to claim Celine! Isn't it enough that we assumed physical custody of her? ::: pounds chest in melodramatic fashion :::
Foxfair, Dubbya might've forgotten to mention Canadian help in the initial craziness of 9/11 (he was probably still wondering what happened at the end of My Pet Goat, cut him some slack!), but rest assured, we did hear about it from lots of other sources, and were mighty grateful.
Perhaps my state's proximity to Canada played a part, but we saw a lot of coverage on our local and regional news about the safe haven that Canadian airports became in the immediate aftermath. Our public broadcasting stations even ran a feed from the CBC instead of usual programming. Since we share borders with Quebec and New Brunswick (and regular ferry service with Nova Scotia), we had a lot of coverage of people coming back to the US via alternate means, and the reports were full of praise for how well everyone was treated by their temporary Canadian hosts.
Plenty of us know what you guys did, and were most thankful you stepped up to help. Heck, my sister and her family (bro-in-law is Canadian, kids have dual citizenship) were in Canada for the duration (they were visiting family and had been scheduled to fly home 9/12) and I for one was glad they were in good hands.
