It's ridiculous because there are probably plenty of gays in the NFL already that haven't come out. This young man is brave to do this and I hope he does well.

Sam's teammates obviously haven't minded -- this year the Tigers went 12-2 overall and 7-1 in one of the toughest conferences in the country, the SEC, including first place in the East Division. It's shameful that these "adults" in the NFL are allowed to continue behaving like this. ETA: The NFL needs all the good press it can get right now, what with all of the news of traumatic brain injury in its players -- you'd think that, even on the most crass level, the execs would figure out that Sam's coming out is good news for football. Also: Either the NFL is seriously underestimating its fanbase or the fanbase really is woefully small-minded. EATA: This is the player we're talking about, BTW. He wasn't just along for the ride at Mizzou; he was an integral part of the team.

Maybe I am crazy (I am considering starting every post with that phrase from now on), but I will wait and see what actually happens instead of getting upset by this article and its predictions. Obviously, these eight people know the culture of the NFL a lot better than I do, but things are changing quickly in this realm. Apparently, his young Mizzou teammates are more or less perfectly fine with his sexuality. Maybe the older "execs," who are not actually IN locker rooms all the time, are a bit out of touch. Maybe not. We shall see.

That is an awesome article. I do hope that anonymous executive and coaches who made those statements are named.

First of all, fuck this "decade or two" timeline. The time is now. Deal with it!!
He's got his idea of locker room balance backwards. When people aren't equally respected, that's what causes an imbalance. How is it a positive thing for the team when there are men who are intimidated into falling silent when they are personally insulted by their teammates? Using that word isn't good old ribbing that's all in fun. It's cruel and hurtful. But, you know, I'm using my woman brain to formulate these thoughts. So I don't get the nuances of what it means to be a non-literal man's-man.

Just as with women wanting to do a particular job or even walk down the street by themselves without being accosted, the onus (and blame) is on the party that it shouldn't be on.
ETA: I saw something really sweet just now. Someone has sneaked into Memorial Stadium, where the Tigers play, and stamped an S and an A in the snow to the left of the big M that graces the slope above the east end zone of Faurot Field. The administration and the alumni association have rallied behind him, too. The more I read, the prouder I am of my school's response to this kid's disclosure. (Among the things I've read: that some of Sam's teammates have accompanied him to Pridefest in St. Louis and to various gay bars. Made me tear up a little.)

These are some of the same arguments that were used to prevent integration in sports. Have these people not learned from that?
