My brother is a HUGE fan of Rick and Bubba. The first uncomfortable moment of Thanksgiving this year came because my brother and uncle were regaling each other with their favorite Rick and Bubba bits and someone asked "What are y'all talking about?" and it became a family wide conversation. My niece piped up that my sister-in-law doesn't like Rick and Bubba because they make fun of dwarves. (Maybe it's one of the supporting cast? My uncle tried to explain the situation but I didn't grasp the hilarity.) Then everyone (who are all evangelical Christians, mind you) got in a conversation about if it was ok to laugh at dwarves and little people and my head kind of exploded and I just left the room.
The thing that really struck me when I was reading Brandy's op-ed was when she mentioned her stepmother and I realized Rick is divorced. If you're being scripturally fundamentalist to condone homosexuality, then divorce is as big of a or a bigger no-no. He's an adulterer. But of course he'll make an exception for himself along those lines. I really felt for her when she said she had been cast into the character of the prodigal daughter for his stories on the radio. I applaud her for taking control of her narrative. I know it won't affect the opinion of people like my brother, but I can't imagine what she said won't help kids and young adults in those evangelical communities who are struggling silently in the closet.

The hatefulness and hypocrisy of Christians are why I stopped going to church and my church had 100 people total. I could not imagine anything less loving than having my father famous for being a conservative Christian using my life as an object lesson in immorality.

I have a Jesus-y cousin who has a daughter named Brandi (yes, with an I - alcohol with a side of stripper) I have a cousin-in-law named Brandi who has appeared in Playboy. Her mother (in-law to my in-laws) was so proud. She was never a stripper, but did dance in a cage at a club in the mid-2000s. |

This book, Full Service by Scotty Bowers, is his memoir as a pimp in 1940's Hollywood, and how he helped find playthings of the same sex for Katherine Hepburn, Walter Pidgeon, "Gore Vidal, Cole Porter, Rock Hudson, director George Cukor, Spencer Tracy, Errol Flynn, and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, " among others. Apparently, he doesn't have any proof, but it still sounds fascinating. |

Gordon Thomson, who was evil Adam Carrington on Dynasty has come out. He also talks about internalized homophobia and life "back then", and as a closeted gay guy back then, I remember it too. Scary times.
