I remember cigarette vending machines, they were at most of the restaurants in my hometown when I was a kid.

Yep, cigarette vending machines were everywhere, and cigarettes were advertised on tv.

We used to go around and push the coin return button on all vending machines and pay phones and sometimes we were rewarded with some change! Off to buy penny candy or a 10 cent Archie comic!

Yep, cigarette vending machines were everywhere, and cigarettes were advertised on tv. I remember when they stopped advertising cigarettes on TV, I think it was 1/1/70 and the day before every other commercial was for some brand of cigarette.

I have relatives who are otherwise really strict fundies, but they all smoked like chimneys and had the craziest assortment of smoking novelties. A very realistic revolver that was actually a lighter, and a donkey dispenser – when you lifted its leg (or bent its ear, I don’t remember) the tail rose and a cigarette came out of its ass. Klassy.
And everyone, even my parents who were non-smokers, had at least one of those furniture-esque ashtrays that was like a small end table except the top was a massive ceramic ashtray. They often had a handle for easy moving to another room.

I was just saying this the other day! I remember getting a vague idea of what this "inflation" thing was all about from those machines, because it seemed like every time I saw one, the price of cigs had gone up by about fifty cents.

I remember the cigarette vending machines!
My mom's a nurse and remembers a time when you could smoke indoors in hospitals.

My mom was a nurse in the 70s, so she remembers that too. She worked in the detox wing and she'd smoke with the recovering alcoholics. She also remembers smoking with her teachers in high school between classes.

Part of my job includes looking for history tidbits for our paper, which means I look through old issues.
There was an item in the ‘60s where someone came to town council requesting that the hospital instill a no smoking policy because it wasn’t nice for a patient to be in a room with a smoker (yes, patients smoked right in their rooms!). The motion was turned down because it infringed on the rights of the smoker!
Times sure have changed and, while I don’t want the government telling me what to do about every little thing, I welcome any no smoking legislation they come up with.

I remember having to do overtime one weekend and walking into our office, which had recently gone non-smoking. (This was around 1990 or so.) I immediately smelled cigarette smoke and tracked it down to a co-worker's desk - she was working overtime as well. When I said "Uh, you're not allowed to smoke in here anymore", she said smugly "I was told that I could because I'm working overtime." Well, PEACHY. No-one bothered to see if that was okay with me, which it most definitely was not - I had (and have) an allergy to smoke. I spent that entire afternoon blowing my nose, coughing, and silently cursing our boss.
