One of the lecture halls on my college campus had ashtrays built into the desks. Later, I was working at a different school and I realized all the "bits and bobs" dishes on everyone's desks were the heavy, amber glass ashtrays from when it was totally cool to smoke...in the library.

I remember when the community college in my area was referred to as "high school with ash trays." You could smoke in the building, just outside the classrooms...they had ashtrays outside every door of every classroom.

My grandmother was a nurse for forever and she started smoking* when she realized that those who did were given frequent smoking breaks. Those who didn't, weren't. Granted, this was in the 30s and 40s, but still.
She never inhaled. She just always kept a pack on her and went through the motions to get those cigarette breaks.

My mom's a nurse and remembers a time when you could smoke indoors in hospitals. My brother was born in 1969 and dads still weren't allowed in the delivery room. My dad tells the story of how all of these fresh newborns were brought into the dads' room by the doctor and there was a cloud of smoke and then they'd light up cigars with the doctor while passing the baby around.

I used to be a social smoker while drinking in college, but it wasn't until I was working in a bookstore that I smoked for real, precisely for these reasons. Also, a lot of interesting things were discussed during smoke breaks.

Anyone else remembering that episode of "Friends" where Rachel pretends to be a smoker so that she'll get info from her boss?

My co-worker used to get me to come outside with her so she'd have someone to talk to while smoking.
Also, wasn't that Joanna Gleason as Rachel's smoking boss? (Go Gleasons!)

When I was your age we had a smoking area in my high school. It was always packed. Sometimes the kids even smoked cigarettes!
What can I say, it was a more mellow time.

My high school had a smoking courtyard too, but by the time I got there it was long out of commission. It was weird to look at old yearbooks and see students and teachers standing around smoking.

My school also had a smoking area, plus you could stop off at the bar down the street at lunch time and buy cigarettes out of the machine that was conveniently placed in the breezeway between the front door and the swinging doors leading into the bar.
