I have never done a research paper using the internet as a tool to find information, I've only ever used books and journal articles. I used to have to read a ton of books for my papers and take lots of notes, and make sure I had all my citations straight and in the proper format. Microfiche!

When you wanted to know the exact time, you would call a special number and would be told "At the tone, the time is 6:56pm." Beeeeep.... I'm assuming it doesn't exist anymore.

I also remember there was a number to call for the weather. And I swear I’m not making this up but I have a very vivid memory of being in elementary school (it was when I was in 2nd, 3rd or 4th grade) and calling a number to get pickle jokes. No one I grew up with remembers this though.

We used to be able to prank call people ... and they didn't know who it was!
The phone used to ring and we didn't know who was going to be on the other end when we picked it up ... and we liked it!

I had my own landline when I was in high school and I thought I was hot shit, tbh. This! My US TV watching in the 80s wasn't a lie...I was right, you all had phones stretched the cord straight, drove around in Kelly Taylor’s red bmw and lived in Ferris Buellers/Kevin’s Home Alone houses! Scarlet just as good as says so! You were indeed hot shit! My dad because he knew it annoyed me and I was dyyyyiiiing of embarrassment wouldn’t upgrade our ancient B&W Telly with two channels until 1986 then he lost the plot altogether and went colour with VCR and a BBC( unofficial) ariel which picked up dodgy signal from a mountain which picked up another dodgy signal from the Welsh coast to get the U.K. channels BBC 1 and 2, ITV and Channel 4! Also I’m going to love this thread I’m going lose tmrw in here :-)

One out of three! There is an old picture of me lying down in the hallway outside my room (I don't know why) talking on my phone with the cord stretched as far as it could go. But my first car was an old sky blue Buick beater, lol. And the 3 BR house with five people, a dog, and two cats was pretty crowded! ;-) We did have a very cool Atari gaming system, though. Space Invaders was my jam.

The phone used to ring and we didn't know who was going to be on the other end when we picked it up ... and we liked it! Unless you had an answering machine, you couldn't just leave the phone ringing and ignore a call, it would drive you nuts. We answered 99% of calls. We still have a landline, but I don't answer the phone unless it's someone I know. And people used to answer their door. I've done canvassing and gone with my kids to sell stuff for scouts, and very few people answer their door anymore. You can tell people are in the house, they just ignore you. When I was a kid, I would never have thought of this. It might be one of my friends seeing if I could come outside! It's hard to build a neighborhood community these days because everyone just stays in their house (but we are trying).

We were big fans of the emergency breakthrough. If you took the wire out of the receiver while you were on a call, it would make a sound like the emergency breakthrough, and we would use that to get off the phone with friends we didn't want to talk to.
And crank calls. We spent a lot of time doing that - we were "making our own fun"! We'd do both random numbers and people we knew. Why was that so much fun? I guess it was pre-internet anonymity.
