What was Carol Potter like? I thought the Walsh parents were so dorky and stiff. It horrifies me to realize I'm older than they were then. Carol was on the other podcast as well. Carol left acting and went back to school, eventually becoming a marriage and family therapist. She's actually really cool. Jennie and Tori loved talking to her. At that time Carol was older than the kids and was married with a child, so I remember them talking about how she kind of kept away from them. I think she thought they had their own lives going on and hers was so different. Jennie and Tori were teens when the show started so that's accurate. They told Carol they felt bad about that, but were glad to get to know her better now that they're all older and more mature. I'm paraphrasing here, but they all had a lovely rapport. In listening to both podcasts, even with one-off characters, the actors are incredibly grateful for having been part of the show and they've nothing but praise for Aaron Spelling. I guess he was a real mensch when it came to the actors. Every one of them has mentioned that they've gotten recognized because of that show, but they aren't bothered by it. I edited my previous post to include that Jennie and Tori had Leslie Bega on who played Marianne Moore in the pilot episode, and Leslie eventually became a real estate broker.

Bumping this since almost a month has passed from the last post. While there are plans to reboot the Nickelodeon show iCarly, Jennette McCurdy won't be taking part. Jennette McCurdy, 'iCarly' star, has quit acting and resents her careerShe said her mom had pushed her into acting as a kid, and she eventually became the main source of financial support for her family.

Stage parents are a real mess. Paul Petersen said something that stays with me (he played Jeff on the Donna Reed Show and founded A Minor Consideration, a nonprofit to give support to young performers): “Let me quote Lonnie Burr, one of the original Mouseketeers: ‘Just seeing a child in show business tells you a lot about the parents.’ You don‘t see doctors and lawyers [doing this], it’s a waste of time. For most kids in the business, the interview process is, say, 20 interviews to get one job that pays $1,000? That‘s below poverty wage.”
Parents who get their kids into this are, so often, looking for the big win, the easy money, and it's the kids who suffer. When your child is the only breadwinner, there's a problem.

When your child is the only breadwinner, there's a problem. About a month ago, my 12-year-old said she wanted an agent for her birthday. Wants to get into movies, make big money. I told her that if she was serious about acting, then she should take some acting classes to see if she really likes it. I also may have gone on a little rant about kids in show business and how it isn’t the healthiest place to be, yada yada yada, and if she were to do anything, expect that I would be with her at all times. Conversation led to Disney and Nickelodeon actresses, which led to Ariana Grande (my daughter is a fan), which led to me talking about the producer of her show and how he is a creep... Her: yeah, that Dan Schneider guy. He’s, like, obsessed with feet. Um, yikes. She said she picked up on it from watching the show. Anyway, she hasn’t brought up an agent or acting classes since so I think we’re good.

By the way, Dan Schneider was behind Sam and Cat, which not only helped Ariana Grande get her big break, but also co-starred Jennette McCurdy. On a side note, I wonder whether there will be a Ronan Farrow-esque expose on Dan Schneider's behind-the scenes shenanigans. (Even I have heard rumblings. Where there is smoke, there is fire.)

I hope so. There are way too many rumors about him and it bothers me that he’s been protected.

I read the interview with McCurdy. Good for her for leaving a profession where she clearly was never happy.
