I think Bo Derek's "appeal" goes back to the fact that she was totally willing to be topless in every film she was in, had a nice body and was kind of the Scandi-Amazon blonde ideal of the '70s. Or maybe blonde ideal of most Hollywood producers at the time, namely, her husband. Casting couch at its finest. But also what other "actress" was willing to be in all of the super-crappy movies she did (Bolero? Tarzan? Yes, I saw them, with the family no less, ugh. Trauma.) Yes, pretty much this. She was hypersexualized and seemed willing to do bad movies with lots of nude love scenes that were borderline X when it was still pretty taboo for mainstream movies. No one saw Bolero or Tarzan for the filmmmaking. In 10 she was set up as the sexy free-spirited alternative to Julie Andrews, who is delightful, but was best known as Mary Poppins and Maria Von Trapp. Bo Derek was also known as a pretty terrible actress. She was similar to Brooke Shields, who was also known for terrible performances in risque bad films at a young age.

Sweet buttery Jeebus, Bolero is a terrible film!
Which brings to mind a good comparison re: Brooke vs Bo. Bolero makes Blue Lagoon look like Casablanca.

Sweet buttery Jeebus, Bolero is a terrible film! "That thing is going to work!" may be one of the great movie quotes of all time. And Bolero introduced me to my long running girl crush, Olivia D'Abo. I have a soft spot for Bo. Last I heard she was raising horses with John Corbett on a farm in Santa Barbara, which sounds like a really nice life to me.

Oh, see now, I feel I should clarify: Bo as a person, I totally get and wanna hang out. Sex symbol? Not so much.

I don't get the fawning over Adam Driver as "hot". Good actor? Sure, but he looks like the result of a Bassett hound and a giraffe mating. I'm thinking it's because he's the current "it" guy.

I am among the converted. For me, it's a combination of slow-burn magma energy, a vague brooding, and also extreme competence in his acting. Also, tall and broad about the shoulders. It caught me off guard because I was like, wow, that guy is all angles and not pretty at all, and then blammo! Definitely not pretty, but appealing and attractive in non-traditional ways.

I call this phenomenon the Mr. Rochester effect. In so many ways he was brilliantly cast as Kylo. He is equal parts attraction and revulsion to me.

He’s one of those actors, to me, that doesn’t necessarily photograph well, but looks better in motion.

I think he's gorgeous. I get sick of the pretty boys.
