Wow. He was by far the best thing about that show (back when I used to watch it).
Wasn't he an ex-alcoholic just like his character on the show?

Nooooooooooo! I enjoyed him on The West Wing (when I used to watch it), but more than that, he seemed like a really sweet man.
I remember seeing Entertainment Tonight follow him around for a day while he was doing a play and The West Wing at the same time. He was working from really early in the morning until late, late at night, and he was keeping going with about 10 coffees from Starbucks and lots of cigarettes. Obviously that's not healthy, and he looked tired, but he was still smiling all the time. He said his alcoholism nearly killed him, so just being alive (and acting) made him so happy.
I'm bummed.

He was an acquaintance of mine. A very, very good and decent man. I'm shocked.

Last season's West Wing had a story arch of Spencer's character having a heart attack. How ironic.
My mom who's a major fan of his is devastated.

I remember when he was added to the cast of LA Law. He was a wonderful breath of realistic air in a cast that was getting increasingly cartoonish. What a solid actor.

How very sad . I feel bad . I really liked him . He would have been 59 on December 20th , he was way too young ... Rest in Peace

Small world, clementine74. His longtime girlfriend, Patty, is a friend of my aunt Lois. They were in plays together in the '70's.
A wonderful and talented man, by far my favorite actor on WW. I'm also devastated by the loss.
