Because SusyHomewrecker, Jessie is BLACK! Everyone is a racist to her unless they're kissing her most awesome black ballerina ass or if its one of the very special Jessie works with a special kid books. Blah
Poor Mallory. I didn't realize how much the writers piled on her until I saw it all listed. She was just their whipping sitter wasn't she?
My favorite was Claudia even if she was functionally slow.

I actually like that super special because all the BSCers get pissed off at each through out the whole book. The books where the BSC was pissed at each other were few and far between, but they were always the most fun. The other two I can think of where everyone was mad at each other were the Super Special where they put on the play Peter Pan, and the one about the parade where they hate their costumes and their float is falling apart. They were also really mad at Mary Anne when she cut her hair, but of course that was perfectly reasonable. I mean, you can't go out and do something wild and crazy like getting a hair cut without expecting everyone will hate you for it.

Amalia - Dealt with abusive boyfriend and racism. Man, Ann M. Martin loved the topic of racism. Was Amalia black? Ann also wrote a book called Slam Book featuring a girl named Randy who was black and her only real character trait was that people called her an "Oreo" because she hung out with white girls. Wasn't this somehing that was brought up in the summer camp Super Special? One of the other campers called Jessi an "Oreo" and Mallory, of course, doesn't understand what it means. For an 11 year old, Jessi sure knew a hell of a lot about racism and was super sensitive about it. I don't think I was up on all my racist terms at the ripe old age of 11.

For someone who thought everyone around her was racist, why did Jessi continue to hang out with those people? Certainly not because the BSC was cool...

The parade one was awesome. Because you kept thinking that the writers were going to have them win, even though it would be unrealistic and annoying. But, they actually lose. I bet if that book happened later in the series, they would have won.
It pissed me off that Maryanne was all forgiving of the other BSCers after they ignore her for weeks because of her hair. Dawn is the ringleader but thats ok because she is missing her dad and that allows her to be a total bitch.
I think the most bitchy Dawn moment was when Mary Anne and her dad move in after the wedding. They are all having trouble adjusting and Dawn goes to Kristy to get advice. Kristy gives her good advice on how to live in a blended family. Dawn takes this advice and decides to scare the crap out of Mary Anne so she will move out of their shared room. What a bitch. But unsurprising, because I think that Sharon is a bitch too.
Because everyone else in Stoneybrook was in the Klan and called her horrible names. So the BSCers were slightly less racist.

Oh yeah, the "Mary Anne cuts her hair and gets horribly shunned" book pissed me OFF! Although the jealousy and social ostracism were somewhat sophisticated themes by BSC standards. Too bad they had to hit the reset button at the end of the book, because it would've been nice to see the sequel in which Mary Anne went all Kill Bill on them. Wasn't this somehing that was brought up in the summer camp Super Special? One of the other campers called Jessi an "Oreo" and Mallory, of course, doesn't understand what it means. Actually, um... that's where my sheltered white ass learned what "Oreo" meant.

I just found this blog that recaps BSC books. It looks pretty cool, especially since the author hates Dawn.

What is really funny about that site is that there are comments from people whining that the writer is being mean and shouldn't read the books if she doesn't like them. Are there really still BSC fans out there? And they get offended because someone doesn't like the books. Hilarious.
