Neil Gaiman is one of my favorite authors. He is mostly known for his Sandman comic series, but he's written several full length novels. He is currently working with artist Dave McKean on MirrorMask, a fantasy film.

That sounds pretty exciting. I read the first Sandman (Preludes & Nocturnes) and I really enjoyed it. Then I read American Gods, and I was really disappointed by the ending. I would probably read more of his graphic novels, but give the rest a miss.

Just wanted to add my love for Neil. Of all the books I've read, I actually think "Neverwhere" is my favorite of his. Of course, nothing will ever come close to "The Sandman" so I don't even compare it to any of his other work. Love him.

It looks like Neverwhere is going to be re-released as a comic book series! How exciting! Apparently there will be an eight-page preview in the upcoming Fables issue. Here's an article about the preview, with a nice picture of Door (the character I named myself after).

Oooo, I knew the title sounded familiar. Anansi, the African spider-god. Heh. I'll be sure to check it out.

Not to take anything away from Gaiman's awesomeness as a writer, but it seems like his novels all have basically the same story: perfectly ordinary guy discovers a world of magic existing just a couple of steps up and to the left of our own. This world is more interesting but more dangerous, but eventually he learns to accept it and makes his home there. Neverwhere has this plot. So does American Gods. And Stardust (although the protagonist already knew about Faerie, so that's different). And Anansi Boys, it looks like.

Ah, well. Minor complaint.

Chiming in to give my love.

I collect his Sandman stuff and most of his novels. I can't choose which is my favorite: Neverwhere or Coraline.

Anyway, I'm just excited as hell coz he's coming over to our part of the world for three days. Woohoo!

I really liked American Gods. I loved how the protagonists was named Shadow and his personality was like a non-entity, almost a fly on the wall. I did think it was a bit cliche that <<Wednesday was Shadow's father>>, but that did explain why Wednesday was so determined to hire him. I loved the different mythologies being incorporated into the story, and the idea that God is (or gods are) dead and the people of today are replacing them w/ short-term gadgets that flame up and die out before they can even reach adolescence. What an awesome analogy for the way things are today.

I thought Stardust was beautiful in a Faerie Tale (heh) sort of way. It reminded me of King's Eyes of the Dragon, in the way that everything was magical and slight-of-eye, and the ending was very satisfying in a Grimm's story sort of way. This would make a great Disney movie. I sorta got a crush on Tristan, too. Shut up!

I tried reading Caroline but couldn't get into it. Can someone give me a brief synopsis? What's the pull?
