I really prefer his short stories, I think. Snow, Glass, Apples is a really cool one. He's good at myth-y, concept-y stuff. Babycakes freaks me out to this day. I think his best work - and his best medium - is in graphic novels, though. The Sandman series is what really justifies Gaiman as a phenomenon, IMO. I don't think his quirky humor and situations always translate well to novel form. Neverwhere, in particular, read weirdly like a comic book script to me, almost more like a blueprint missing the pictures than an independent story (although I loved the beatific-evil angel). If I had only read his novels, I don't know that I'd think he was that brilliant. His imagination's a lot stronger than his prose, maybe. I think all his stuff is fun to read, but the graphic novels are so dark and fantastic and wind up feeling a lot more nuanced to me, somehow.

Neil Gaiman was on the Colbert Report last night (Monday), and he was absolutely charming, and just as quick as Colbert.
I'm coming slowly to Gaiman, I've downloaded three of his books, but haven't read him as yet. I start today!

famvir, I really enjoyed that interview too. It was great to see somebody give back to Colbert as much as he got. Colbert: "You took away a Newbery Award from an American writer!" Gaiman: "Obviously, until you write Fuck It, We're All Going To Die, the Newbery Medal is going to go to people like me."
