Two seriously dumb errors in an article about soccer:
Grisly, like an overly earnest episode of CSI: Soccer? Grisly? Like, he'd been attacked by a bear but kept playing, or is that grizzly? Do they mean gristly? Or grizzled? And FWIW, I've seen him, and he is more wiry than gristly. Urgh.
This one has poor construction and a misuse of 'phase':
Ugh, and mild despair.

Ugh indeed. That second one was in a published article?

This is more of a semantic gripe, and kind of specific, but it drives me absolutely bonkers when people use the word "forced" to refer to reading curricula. As in, "I was forced to read Catcher In the Rye, and I hated it!" It brings out my Inigo Montoya. As unpleasant as it might or mightn't be, I don't think it's the best use of the word. I see it all the time on GoodReads in particular, but it's widely enough used in the general population.
Thank you for letting my unburden myself.

I'm grading an informal/response essay I assigned for my 2000-level college class. The writing is pretty competent overall, but I've graded at least seven papers that do not have any paragraph breaks whatsoever.

Ugh, rampant misuse of "in lieu of"/"in light of" lately and it's driving me nuts. My boss even does it and we're professional editors. He keeps saying things like "in lieu of this new information, we should..." Crazy making!!
Also, yesterday someone was telling me about singing a "melody" of all the songs from a movie. Close, but not quite, my friend..
