I think Patsis does a good job of incorporating the FC elements without being openly negative toward the strip. Lordy lordy, there is enough to make fun of there, but he manages to keep it reasonably friendly. I'm sure he knows the current author and has cleared the level of parody he is doing here.
Wasn't it PBS that did a bunch of similar strips referring to the strip Cathy? He also managed to stay out of trouble with that and apparently is friends with that author as well.
Of course the Get Fuzzy crossovers they do are the best, and given that he and Darby are probably the best syndicated cartoonists around today, those strips are always respectful of each other's work.

My favorite Stephen Pastis goofs on other strips: (a) The one in which Rat is taking steroids and the last panel shows him all buffed up, in a Speedo, announcing: "I will kick Mary Worth's a@@." (b) The one where Rat complains that Pastis can't draw food for shit and he's leaving. Last panel: A masterfully drawn Family Circus circle panel with Jeffy pointing to an open fridge and crying, "Mommy, there's a rat in our refrigerator."

Honestly, it's kind of childish the way the Pearls Before Swine guy is constantly ripping on the Family Circus, but I hate the Family Circus so much that I always laugh anyway. So I hope he keeps on doing it. ;D I don't get why it's childish. Generally I don't really respect someone who is constantly making fun of someone else's work, especially if they are in the same field, because it makes them look petty and jealous, even if that's not the case. Just IMO. But as I said I do find it funny when the Pearls guy does it because Family Circus is just so, so annoying! It should have been cancelled yeeears ago.

The Chicago Tribune banned today's Get Fuzzy.

Wait, why? I read it and I couldn't think of why it was ban-worthy.

I was confused too, maybe the nut crunching part of the joke?

Wait, why? I read it and I couldn't think of why it was ban-worthy. I guess the use of the word "cracker" referring to the white guy in the strip. Maybe they have a policy that bans all racial/ethnic slurs, regardless of context. Rapspeak is the most tired comic device when used by white writers (to me, there's always a hint of "those crazy black people and their funny words" condescension, and most of the time the vocabulary's used incorrectly), but Tuna Flav made me laugh. Thugged-out little kitty cat with a digital clock on a chain! So cute!

The Tuna Flav [HEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!] was today's comic - this one from yesterday was the one that apparently got baned. Tuna Flav. Hee.

Right, it's the goons comic, not the Tuna Flav one that got banned. I still can't see why.

The 'nut crunch' joke is mildly offensive, at best. I can't even imagine anyone getting worked up about it. If a kid asked a parent to explain the joke, it's easy enough to say "the goons are going to get him more cereal." It's not like you'd have to get out an illustrated medical encyclopedia and a Lenny Bruce album and rip the last vestiges of innocence from the child.
