Do yourself a favor, birdface, and get the Calvin & Hobbes boxed set. It's a lot of money ($100 on Amazon), but I promise you it's absolutely worth every penny.

As you might guess, I'm a little nostalgic for Calvin and Hobbes, too.
As time goes by, the memory of what the strip was really like blurs, especially with those execrable "Calvin look-alike pisses on something" stickers you see everywhere.
I was sorting some old files in my office and ran across a strip I had saved from back in the day. Really not the sweet, carefree little boy playing with his tiger that I sometimes remember. Here is the dialogue:
Panel 1: (C) The problem with people is they don't look at the big picture.
Panel 2: (C) Eventually, we're each going to die, our species will go extinct, the sun will explode, and the universe will collapse.
Panel 3: (C) Existence is not only temporary, it's pointless. We're all doomed, and worse, nothing matters!
Panel 4: (H) I see why people don't like to look at the big picture. (C) Well, it puts a bad day in perspective.

Yeah, Bill got a bit cranky as his strip wore on. Still the best comic strip ever, as far as I'm concerned. I reallllllyyyy want the boxed set. I saw it at the bookstore and it's awesome.

I would have become cranky to if I had to go through what he did with the syndication.
My mother was a school librarian. She encouraged a student to write a letter to Bill Watterson telling him how much he loved Calvin & Hobbes. Bill, actually, called the student and had a long conversation with him.

I have an ex with a Calvin tatt on one calf and a Hobbes tatt on the other calf and it drives him crazy when I ask him how Dennis the Menace and Tigger are doing. I don't think it's clever or anything, I just do it because it drives him crazy.

If no one has heard the news, Funky Winkerbean is going to be jumping ahead ten years in November; the link below has a picture of what the characters are going to look like when the jump happens. Funky Winkerbean: Ten Years Later

Funky's Lisa Moore starts to die today. I don't know whether to burst into tears (these people are far more compelling than anything Lynn Johnston could come up with) or scream in horror at the "dance partner" who's showed up to claim her from Les. (This link is time-sensitive, but after today just ask for the Oct. 3 comic and you'll see the one I'm talking about.)

Wow. That strip has never been in my funnies section so it's new to me but having just read the last months worth I have to agree with you Sunnyhorse. So much more compelling than anything LJ could ever come up with. I am actually a little choked up.

OK, let me see whether I recognize the the "10 years on" characters: Les and Summer; Crazy and his wife and daughter; Becky and her daughter from Afghanistan (did Wally finally die after all his near-misses, and where is their other child?); Linda, Bull, and their daughter; Funky, Holly, and their son. Is that right?
