Anyway, I just wanted to bump this up for two reasons. First, according to Comics Curmudgeon, tomorrow should be the day that Zits runs its controversial teen speak strip. At least prior to CC's hiatus over the Thanksgiving weekend, there was some debate whether it would be something mild and not really controversial at all like Jeremy using the word sucks, or maybe something like "WTF" if it's another strip on text messaging. Looks like you called it. Controversial? What??

Well, it'll be controversial to people like my mom who think saying "sucks" is as bad as saying "shit." Otherwise? Completely underwhelming. If I didn't know it was supposed to be "controversial" I wouldn't have thought anything of it.

As a twenty-year-old... There are people who are offended by the word sucks? I honestly had no idea.

Well my mom is the only one I know of, I'm sure there are others though. I always have to say stinks instead of sucks around her because she gets annoyed. But she's a 50-something Catholic so it's probably a generational/religious thing.

There are plenty in my family who hate the word. I am 35 years old and still get the stink eye if I use that word.

Me too! My dad thinks nothing of saying "shit" and "goddamn" but Lord help me if I use the word "sucks" around him. (I'm 38.)

My paper is giving Cathy the boot! Woo-hoo. I've dreamed of this day but never thought that it would come to pass, but the people of Vancouver rose up and voted in favour of replacing it with something else. The something else looks kind of sucky, but it's better than the self-hating crap coming from Cathy.

As a twenty-year-old... There are people who are offended by the word sucks? I honestly had no idea. I had at least two teachers who hated the word--they would be in their early sixties now, I suppose. Of course, as junior high kids, we knew the regular curse words were bad, and could give you a ballpark idea why others would find them offensive, but we could not figure out why "sucks" was bad, especially because, as one teacher would say, it's especially demeaning to women. Then we kind of figured it out. Anyway, topic: batmom, congrats on the free state of Vancouver booting Cathy!! May we all live to see this day.

If your teacher never learned that, maybe that is why she was so upset.

My dad actually said "Pardon my language" before he said that something sucked in a recent phone conversation. Old folks are weird.
