See, I don't have a problem with the caveman funnies of yore... when it turned into the oftentimes-judgemental conserative Christian caveman funnies, then I called it the worst. Oh, I meant "fundies" as in religious fundamentalist zealots, not "funnies" (it looks like a mis-spelling now that I look my post over...). I don't have a problem with cavemen strips, either! I just have a problem with it because all it does is preach. And my big question is, how can one preach about Jesus when one has set his stip BEFORE Christ, as the title of the strip suggests? That's like doing a strip about computers and setting it the 1700s!

I have a problem with caveman strips, as in stinking Alley Oop! I can't believe this thing is still going! As old and as lame as it is, the past month has he and his girlfriend being taught to dance by Rudolph friggin Valentino!!! Rudy's so dreamy, will he steal Alley's girl? We have all the old ones in our paper, I guess I have the local demographic to blame.
We had Pearls Before Swine for about a month, untill the complaints started.

I'm sorry to say that I hate Calvin and Hobbes. Maybe I just don't "get it," or maybe it's been used in one too many school assignments and classes. (You know, when the teacher photocopies the strip and puts it on an overheard or exam. It's not that freaking good that you need to show us strips that relate to the assignment.) I had a lot of teachers to do that too. I never got the point of it either. I had a science teacher who always used to show us "Frank & Ernest" cartoons. I hated those.

Funny, I have always hated when teachers used comics for class. Then I went to "teacher school". One of the first things we were taught was that a comic strip was a great way to teach students to think critically about things, and to help them learn to read between the lines. Funnier, I never used em, because I tend to give students more credit (probably more than I should) for having an ability to think for themselves in more complex terms (editorials, opinion pieces). Even if they think WRONG, at least they think.

I like The Far Side and Real Life Adventures. I don't like Family Circus. I used to like Garfield, but I don't care for it that much anymore.

Spinsterliz people round here didn't get Pearls before Swine. Our paper put it up against another strip for a month and had readers vote for what they wanted to keep. It didn't win.

We recently got Pearls before Swine here and people were bitching as well. Too bad for them because I am in love with this strip and wish it had been in my paper all along. Those crocs crack me the hell up.

I love the crocodiles, too! I love how their dialouge is misspelled and their letters are not capitalized. "me eet you!" heh heh.
As for using comics at school: once, when I was in high school, my english teacher passed out a "Cathy" comic to illustrate some corny point she was making (no surprise, because my english teacher was an idiot) and some guy behind me groaned, "I haaaaate 'Cathy.'" It was good to know that even teenaged boys can see how stupid that strip is. (Formula for "Cathy": Aack ack ack! I'm fat! I have to buy a bathing suit, and I hate doing that! Aack ack ack, the bathing suit doesn't fit! I'm fat! And I'm old! repeat every day for years on end.)

Mr. Sunnyhorse says that Aaron Magruder, creator of Boondocks, is taking a six-month hiatus. Crap!
