dis, in the end it was a false alarm. Of course. Because that would change the entire tenor of the series, these days. Being a pregnant slutbot is less attractive. So all the angst was for nought. I think there was more to it, but honestly, it was so bad, I can't even remember. Exciting, no?

This thread has sent me off to the library to search for any other Anita Blake novels... I had read two or three of them already and enjoyed them as a fluffy read. I opted for Killing Dance, and WOW did she put a bitchy afterword in that one about the demise of her first marriage. Basically wonderful pure First Hubby who was the "first man to touch her where only swimsuits had before" (Blegh!!!!!) couldn't handle that she liked sex, liked talking about sex, and liked to explore her "dark side." She couldn't stop talking about what a mistake it had been to marry that guy and how much Anita mirrored her life, and that her first husband just couldn't handle the fact that Anita was having sex and liking it. Now granted, he may have been a stick in the mud, but she couldn't have come across more petulant and Mary Sue-ish if she tried. It basically confirmed for me everything that has been mentioned in this thread.

You know, it's bad enough to write a really conspicuous Mary Sue. It's so much worse if you just go out and admit that it's a really conspicuous Mary Sue. Honestly, I enjoyed the AB books, even up to Narcissus in Chains, but I don't want to know that I'm basically reading an author's therapy sessions. Even if you're going to make your books your therapy, at least don't fricking announce it to the world.
Bet her daughter's just going to looooove that when she grows up. Geez.

Annotated Anita Blake Comics Be sure to mouseover the pictures.

She also apparently does not own a mirror.

HAHAHAHAHAHA. Oh man, that's so freakin' funny. And you just know she meant them seriously, too.
A couple of days ago I wanted something light and fluffy to read and found, at the back of the shelf, the first Diana Tregarde mystery, by Mercedes Lackey. From what I remember, that was a good series - Diana was a witch, rather than a vampire hunter, but similar feel to the early Anita books, but without all the sex. Too bad they didn't sell well and she only wrote a couple of them (and then had some mentally unbalanced types threaten her).

In the second picture, she has her gun pointed at the guy sitting next to her. BZZZT! You lose on gun safety points. She's also groping his thigh, though I gather it's the dude to her right who's her husband.

Am I the only one who looked at that pix, and went, "Hey Rose!"

Those photos look so cheap. The WordArt font, the obviously photoshopped-in "throne" in the second picture. Also, as someone in the comments pointed out, they all look really uncomfortable holding their weapons.
