Am I the only one who looked at that pix, and went, "Hey Rose!" I did too! So when is she going to find Jesus like Anne Rice and go all holier-than-thou and drive her hardcore fans crazy?

I think she lost Jesus and that's where all the trouble started. Anita was initially a fairly hardcore Christian, in a way that, to me at least, shrieked "LKH IS A CHRISTIAN", and there's still a certain amount of lip service given to that - except that her entire lifestyle now doesn't really mesh with it, but she says that God seems to be okay with it. LKH found Wicca at some point, and also sex, and it all went to pot. It's a terrible thing when you're so involved with your Mary Sue that your life changes have to affect their plotlines.

LKH grew up in a repressive Xtian environment and attended a repressive Xtian college. (She lives here in St. Louis, and unfortunately I had to copyedit a piece on her for the city magazine I used to work for. Woman is waaaaay too taken with herself for such an absolutely shitty writer.)

I just went back and found the article, and I think I got her upbringing wrong, even if I got her education right. Enjoy.

I hate her way more than is healthy. Her writing teacher probably hated her because she did and still does use descriptions like "his eyes were a stormy blue, like the sea after a storm." And I love genre stuff, but those stories she named aren't "just" monster tales, they're stories (with actual plots and themes and junk, Laurell!) that use supernatural elements to good effect. LKH's type of writing is the reason why genre fiction has a bad name - "Beowulf had monsters, and so does my book! Therefore it is legitimate art, harkening back to the very roots of storytelling, and I do not have to bother with things like style, coherence, or character development!"
Between what I've read of her books and what she posts on the internet, I can't believe she earned an English degree and actually worked as an editor. For a textbook company! Those poor students, with all those spelling and grammar errors that must have flown by unchecked.

I have never owned/picked up a Laurell K. Hamilton book, but everything I read here sounds really intriguing. Is there a good, snarky primer I could find? I'd like to read about her Mary Sue characters and her turgid description. I don't know much about the author and her relationships, so I don't know how I'd be able to call her characters Mary Sues or anything like that. Either way, all of this just sounds amazing. Are there any good links?

I read that rant she posted a while ago about how "if you don't want your mind expanded, don't read my books" or something like that. I can't stand the way she acts as though if you don't like the books, you're clearly repressed and close-minded.

Laurell is like a goth teen stuck in a small conservative town, except she's 44 and her fame has given her plenty of opportunities to see the world and meet all kinds of different people.
