Wow. Interesting. I'm kind of surprised Shipka is doing this though, from the commentaries she seemed well-protected from the seamier elements of Mad Men.
I saw a discarded newer V.C. Andrews book in a neighbor's recycling last week. It seems she (the ghostwriter) jumped on the vampire trend at some point. I guess there's a lot you can do with the basic structure- maybe move it to space or ancient times to spice things up.
ETA: The trailer looks really good. I'm in.

The trailer site's down! I am surprised that Shipka is doing this, too, but I think she'll acquit herself well in this. ETA: Here it is!

It looks deliciously trashy. I may have to watch it.

Here is a link to an article from Slate about my generation's fascination with Flowers in the Attic by V.C. Andrews. I don't know if I agree with the article's premise, but then again, I was a Heaven fan more so than a Cathy one.

Lifetime is already working to adapt Petals on the Wind. The Flowers in the Attic movie airs next Saturday, January 18.

Here is a link to an article from Slate about my generation's fascination with Flowers in the Attic by V.C. Andrews. I don't know if I agree with the article's premise, but then again, I was a Heaven fan more so than a Cathy one. This is a fascinating article, and I think way more insightful than that article from somewhere else that said the world would be a better place if Flowers in the Attic had never existed. Excusez-moi? I don't necessarily agree in whole with the ideas the author floated, but I think her analysis and interpretation of the data is solid. Also, it's interesting that she wove the ideas of physicality and the body into the series as part of the motifs for freedom and sexuality; it's no coincidence that Lurlene McDaniel, queen of teen tragedy porn exists with a huge following, too. I actually do have a scholarly book about VC Andrews somewhere. I suppose now is a perfect time to dig it out of wherever it is.

That was an interesting article, but I think it's complete bs. I didn't love FITA when I was in 7th grade because of the "the visceral, adolescent feeling of being held hostage by your own family." And I didn't have any mother issues either. It was just a really good story, written at my reading level, with a lot of titillating topics presented in a way that wasn't too explicit or scary. I was really into Harlequin romance novels at the time too, for roughly the same reasons.
