Has anyone else been reading The Lunar Chronicles series, by Marissa Meyers? I am... or trying to... I'm stuck one third of the way through Cinder. I can't understand the popularity of the series. It's just so simple and obvious, and nothing about the science fiction setting makes sense. I know it's a YA, and seems to be younger YA (10 - 13?) but it's insulting to teens to think that they would just accept sloppy worldbuilding with no explanations.

I read (skimmed) Cinder and haven't continued with the series. Not my cup of tea, but I found that my 8th grade female students liked it well enough.

I haven't read any of it, but it's probably a mix of things--maybe they like the story or the relationships or the characters, or maybe everyone else is reading it, so it's fun to talk about or get the references if someone jokes about it. Scifi/fantasy are not my genres, so maybe I'm out of my depth, but I also remember trying to read a lot of sci-fi (because a lot of my friends liked it) and being bored to death with meticulous, well-thought out and lavishly built worlds because they often (not always) came at the expense of getting into the characters.
Trying to understand the popularity of anything is often a fool's errande. ; )
