Not sure if anyone here has read the Night World series by LJ Smith (young adult fantasy fiction, v. v. good. Inexplicably obscure compared to the mainstream Harry Potter, btu a devoted cult following). The following is not taking account of age so just assume that i mean the younger selves in the cases of some of the following actors, as some of them would be too old now. That said i see:

Unfortunately, I have not seen enough of Damian Lewis to debate that.

Just Jared reports that Russell Crowe might be cast as Sherlock Holmes[/color] (!):

"Russell is the favorite for the role as it’s felt he’ll give the character the action-man-like qualities the part is going to require."

Please God no. Sherlock Holmes has always been a literary crush of mine, and I just can't imagine Russell Crowe playing him. Basil Rathbone was my fave SH, and while I agree that sometimes film-makers overemphasize the character's cerebral side rather than his physical skills, he's not an action hero! Remake King Solomon's Mines if you're desperate to do a period action piece!

If I were casting Sherlock Holmes, I'd love to see Damian Lewis or Toby Stephens in the part.

Jeremy Brett was IT as far as I'm concerned. Russell Crowe? No. Not as Holmes, not as Watson. Not even as the bad guy.
