Ding dong, the witch is dead.[/url] I had a subscription early on-- I think it was a present from my mom, who knew I loved Sassy -- but Jane always annoyed me. The cutesy "we're rebels!" tone, the ridiculous writing/interviews, the awful letters from Jane herself....it was like a trainwreck in magazine form. Any thoughts/postmortems?

I always thought they were trying too hard to be edgy. Sorry Jane, but Nylon and Bust do it better.

Good riddance. That publication went down the shitter a long time ago. It's about time somebody flushed it.
PS: did anyone ever post on the Jane boards? Those were ok back in the day.

I hated how Jane always had that "We're bad girls! We don't like mainstream stuff!" attitude and yet they put people like Hilary Duff and Paris Hilton on their covers.
I think the main problem with the mag was that most girls expected (and hoped) for it to be just like Sassy, but it wasn't. That's the only reason I ever bought that magazine, because I was hoping it would be like Sassy.
I found it very rude and insensitive at times. I remember there was an article about a girl who's family was killed in Vietnam and she fled to the US and was homeless, and the writer was like, "but now she's turned all that into something good, of course" in a really eye-rolling type of way. What a nasty thing to say about someone who's overcome tragedy. I like snark, but only when it's appropriate.

Jane's (the editor, although it frequently applies to the mag too) whole name-dropping celebrities schtick drove me nuts. To be fair, it did lead to a fabulous episode of Daria, so I shouldn't complain too much...

This magazine was an absolute piece of garbage.
My roommate loved it, her goal in life was to work for Jane.
It fit because she is/was a "bad girl, non mainstream stuff" kind of chick. Except not.

I don't BELIEVE it! It's over? I was down for this magazine from day one. I stood by it even when it sucked (often).

I had so much love for Sassy back in the day, and I always hated how Jane tried to use the same style and fell so flat. What came off as chatty and friendly in a teen mag - namely, the way the writers interjected themselves into their stories - just seemed flighty and navel-gazing in a women's mag, and they never did live up to their "we're the alternative!" mission statement. I wonder if part of it was that when Sassy was around, the concept of "alternative" wasn't fully mainstream yet? You didn't see articles in other places about thrift-store shopping for a prom dress or how to clean your house with biodegradable cleansers. Then again, Jane kind of gave up on being alternative anyway - they pretend that Boho style and Pamela Anderson are edgy and different, but it's pretty much the same stuff all the magazines show.

Thank God. Finally. I tried to read it on occasion, but it just sucked so hard. I was never a big Sassy fan. I think I missed its wave. I heard about its awesomeness and I tried to get into Jane because of the Sassy connection, but it sucked like a dyson.

I completely forgot about the Pam Anderson column. That was when I canceled my subscription for good.
