I like to give new homeowners the Junk Drawer Bag (or Bucket). You fill a gift bag or a bucket with all of those annoying little things that homeowners need but can never find right at that moment. That would include string or twine, rubber bands, pencils, pens, light bulbs, paper towels, a measuring tape, picture hangers, a screwdriver, etc.
But no, a plant is not too boring.

Wine is always good, too. Or a bottle of champagne to celebrate.

Another vote for the vino/champagne idea.

Does anyone have ideas on birthday presents for a new bf? He's into baseball (crazed Mets fan), cigars, and golf. It's our first "birthday" together and he's already trumped me by giving me a really nice gift for no particular reason already. I'd say Mets tix but he already gets those for himself...

Gift certificate to the nicest golf course that the public is allowed to play on in NY. Beth Page Black anyone? Then if he does not want them, send em to me or Topher. Or...for fun..Yankees tickets. ;D

You think you are going to play Beth Page Black when you can't even come to Chicago for a Hawks/Canucks game?

Is it silly to ask if he's subscribed already to Cigar Aficionado? If he is, then see if there is a really cool cigar bar near you. Preferably (and obviously) one which he frequents. Many of them have special, gold-plated/named lockers in their humidifier room for their regulars in order to keep in all their cigars. If it's not too much, perhaps you could get one, put in a few good cigars and then give him the key in a wrapped box. I did that for an ex-BF at my/our favorite bar (a cigar/martini place called 10 Downing Street) and their humidifier room is SOOOOOOOOO damn cool! And he was over the moon at it.

No, it's not silly, I don't think he is, Kafka! I'm intrigued by the cigar bar idea, thanks! Maybe I'll look into some sort of collectible baseball book too.

You think you are going to play Beth Page Black when you can't even come to Chicago for a Hawks/Canucks game? And where were you when the Canucks came to your town? Oh yeah, Florida. Topic: Cigar stuff is a great idea, not that I am into them. Scotch is more my bag!

bklynred, as the wife of a lifelong Mets fan, here's my advice. If he has a good internet connection and they don't show the Mets away games in NYC, get him a subscription to MLB.com. It's $50 and he'll be able to watch the away games on his (or any) computer.
