I'm very excited because I managed to get my mom to admit that she wants something, and I was able to find it. I got her woven purse a few years ago when we were out shopping together and she admired it. She liked it so much she wore it out and told me she'd like a new one for mother's day. Well, I went out today, found a bunch of them, and since they were 50% off I got her two in different styles. Woo hoo!

Help! My baby sister is finishing her graduate degree in a matter of weeks and I need some advice for a gift. She's 26 and currently living at home with my mother, so she doesn't need anything house-like. I am fairly skint myself but I would like to get her something special and fairly unique, as this is a one-off experience and I would like to commemorate it. She has fairly eclectic aesthetic tastes--graphically, she loves octopi themed things, and occasionally lingerie-themed design. Sometimes her aesthetic borders on the seriously weird--she bought one of those stuffed tuffet/chair things that look like a high heeled shoe with hardly a stab of irony. I don't really want to get her a book, but I might guess wrong with jewelry. I was shopping at Etsy and saw some great things [/color]in the accessories section, but I don't know if it's enough. I couldn't afford anything especially 'precious,' like an engraved flask sterling mug or some other gag-me-not from Things Remembered. I would like to maybe make a "basket" but I don't know what the centerpiece should be--maybe a padfolio? A gift certificate for some bidness clothing? Her degree is in history with a concentration on preservation and management, so her field isn't really suit-y, but I'm really just stumped. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

I like the octopus tote. The padfolio is an interesting idea - you could contact the bagmaker and see if she could work one up (or better yet, a cover for one - that way, when the octopus is inappropriate, it can stay home!)

This isn't a gift exactly, but I need some help from witty people so where else would I turn but here? I am going to be bringing the cake to a retirement party for a friend of mine. She's a older than me, but she's great fun. She was a teacher for nearly 30 years and is now retiring to spend time with her grandkid and play golf.
I want the cake to be golf themed, but I can't think of anything clever to have them write on it. I want to avoid "Happy Retirement" and stick with the golf idea.
I keep trying for a play on the old "the grass is always greener on the other side." Something like "the green is always better" ... but then nothing. :/ Any clever pun will do!
Help me come up with something brilliant that I can pass off as my own idea! ;D

Indygirl, I can't think of anything myself but I just Googled "best golf jokes" and "best golf one-liners" to see if anything inspired me. There's a ton out there, some are "ball" related (har har) but most are G or PG rated, and you could skim through them to find something that your co-worker would like.
Edited to delete bad link. There is no shortage of golf cake ideas available for viewing on the internets! I know cake-ho Wilton makes golf-themed accessories for cake toppers but you could also do cupcakes, etc.

For the cake, how about:
"Life's always better on the 18th hole."
"Here's to life on 18 holes." (Has the benefit of being short and can fit on the cake.)
"Say Hello to your 11 handicap." (Or whatever would be the perfect ideal.)
"Helloooo 18 holes and a perfect handicap."
You get the gist.

Thanks y'all! I like that idea about life being better on the 18th hole. And I am going to do some googling now!

Does anyone have a good idea for a housewarming gift? My SIL just bought a new home. Catch is, she works for a major housewares/furniture/decorating store, so she gets a discount on all that kind of stuff. I was thinking a plant, but is that too boring?
