She does write poetry, noelie, though not as often as she reads it. She actually started the poetry society at our college, so she's a big poetry buff. I'd buy her a book of poems by one of her favorite authors, but I'm not sure which ones she has! The journal is a good idea, though. Carolinnian, I hadn't thought of reproductions of ancient art, but that's a cool idea. Her Masters studies are actually about Roman Israel (her homeland), so maybe I could find something incorporating those ideas. Thanks again! I found this[/color] on eBay and think that might be cool. Hmmmmm.

Okay, so I have a really really good friend who's due 1st of December. I want to get her something useful, but there are a few caveats. First thing is that she's here in Australia, and I'm moving back to the States late November/early December, so I can't really make frozen/fresh meals for her when the baby comes. She's a vegetarian and into environmentalism, so no fur coats or disposable diapers. She's a really good friend and an absolutely lovely person, so I don't want to get, like, a pair of booties and be done with it.
I'm looking for something useful for her and/or the baby. She loves cooking, so I was going to get together lots of organic basic cooking items just before I leave, so she won't have to worry about going out shopping with a newborn. I want to get something else though, as organic flour and fair-trade cocoa does not an adequate gift make. I have absolutely no experience with children, so I'm pretty lost here. Anyone who does have children, or has been around young babies -- what would be something that's good, useful, and not throw-away that I could get her? Help! (No such thing as the perfect gift, I know, but I'm going to try!)

My strategy for babies is to get something fussy or cute for the shower, and then something very practical for the actual birth, usually onsies since I figure new moms go through them like water. I've also been known to slip in something fun for the parents, like a DVD of "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle," since they probably won't be getting out of the house often.

beatle2102[//b], is there a cloth diaper service in her neighbourhood (they come and collect the dirty nappies and leave clean ones)? You could maybe get her a gift certificate for that, which would be both useful and meet her environmental standards.
And I'm always very partial to giving lovely children's books. They're long term gifts and not often thought of by others.

Here's a brain-teaser: My mom's husband, poor thing, is having problems with his vision. Ordinarily, I'd give him a book or a movie for Christmas, but I'd like to give him something that doesn't involve sharp vision. (And something that can be shipped relatively inexpensively.) Help?

If he's a reader, how does he feel about audiobooks? It would be a great solution if he's open to them. (Unlike my dad, who would probably go into a fit of apoplexy if given an audiobook.)

My Dad LOVES audiobooks, and he's not even having a vision problem. I'm telling you, they're very big with elderly folks, I think it's a great idea.

Beatle, Pottery Barn Kids makes the softest crib sheets that you have ever felt- I have given two of them as gifts and they are always huge hits. LilB had the changing pad cover, and the next one will have these sheets. They are so soft and warm, you don't have to worry about the munchkin getting cold. LinkETA: It won't directly link, the sheets are called CHAMOIS CRIB SHEETING.
