I figured that I could give him a good rating and then say something that sends off alarms without being rude, like "Payment received within 24 hours" and nothing else. It's not an insult but it's not warm and fuzzy. Thanks for all the input because this is all new to me!! Very good! That's what I was going to suggest. Like "Payment by e-check, cleared in 24 hours". (That would let people know about the "e-check" thing, too, with which I have zero familiarity). Our paypal money comes out of a checking account but I don't think it's the same thing. But then, I don't spend $500 at a time, either.

His eCheck STILL hasn't cleared. He'd better not give me a bad rating for sending it late since it's taken me so long to get the money!!! It's pissing me off. The auction ended last Thursday! In the future you can opt to not take that form of payment or put a blurb in your auction that if they pay with an Echeck that you will wait for the payment to clear before the item ships. That way you're covered by spelling out your shipping policy. Hope it clears soon!

Please tell me you haven't shipped it yet. PLEASE!!! In that case, I'd email him again and see what's up. If he doesn't answer you could look into relisting the item or there's something called a "second chance" something or other that I've seen is available.
I'm leaning toward a giving him neutral rating at best at this point, but it is your first one, as another poster pointed out. It's starting to smell funny to me, though, unless there's been some communication.

About e-checks...
The first time I got one, it was from a buyer in the US. It took 4 or 5 days to clear and I posted her item after it had cleared. I emailed her to let her know it was on its way from the UK to the US, via airmail. 3 days later, she emailed me, squawking wildly that it hadn't arrived, and demanding her money back as this was "unacceptable". The amount wasn't much - and sure as hell not worth risking a neg over (and I'd recently been negged for nothing so was being overly cautious), so I refunded, pointing out at the same time that airmail takes at least 4 days and I'd posted as soon as the e-check cleared. She de-registered from eBay a few days later, so maybe she was tired of people waiting for e-checks to clear.
The one and only time I paid by e-check, it took twelve days to clear. I have no idea why. The money was gone from my bank account instantly. I'd emailed the seller to let them know - again, it was for a small amount. 11 days later, as it hadn't cleared, I asked her to cancel as she was concerned about it not clearing, and sent her a money order. It cleared the day she received the money order. I got a positive from the seller, just a "great communication".
I've never had problems with PayPal before this "e-check" thing came in and I suspect it's just a way for them to hold onto your money for longer. So, Grumpy Girl, it may not be his fault it hasn't cleared yet. I hope it clears soon though.
As for him not emailing you, some buyers and some sellers don't. It's annoying. Especially when you're waiting on a huge payment like that.

Grumpy Girl, your buyer paid for the item within a week of purchase. I don't see how you could consider giving them anything other than positive feedback. There is no rule thats states a purchase must be paid for immediately or that a buyer must answer your emails. The transaction may not have gone exactly to your liking, but the purchase was completed in a timely manner.

Yes, I agree with this. The buyer hasn't technically done anything to warrant a neg (or even, at this point, a neutral, imo). You could leave a positive and something like "communication could have been better" but I don't think a neg is kosher. Have you sent it yet, GG? I'm sure it'll be fine but I wouuldn't ship anything before the cheque had cleared.
Not trying to be know-it-all, btw!

I agree, the problem is that I sent an email telling him congratulations and that I'd ship it when I received payment and asked if UPS ground was okay. No response. I got the payment notice but saw that it was an eCheck so I sent another email that as soon as it cleared I would ship the item and was UPS ground okay. I haven't heard a peep from him and am just concerned that he'll give me a bad rating for it taking so long for him to get it. I can understand that he probably doesn't want to be my best friend but have the common courtesy to answer my flippin' questions!! Hopefully nothing happens with the ratings or I'll be upset. Is there somewhere I can complain if he rates me badly and I feel it's unjust? ETA: No, don't worry, I haven't shipped it. If he negs you, you can respond and it will post it next to his neg. But I would not worry, I have had plenty of people pay with echeck and they always take a long time to clear. The buyers should know this.

If he hasn't bothered to email you, he probably wouldn't bother giving you a bad rating, either. If the buyer is a longtime ebayer with a lot of ratings, he's probably very blase about the whole ebay thing, whereas I sit and wait for the last second to make sure I won and pay right away and get all excited because I lead a boring life, apparently. Some people never acknowledge anything and you just get the item one day. Other people are very conscientious and pleasant and communicate with you. I'm sorry you've been having a worrisome first transaction; especially for a large amount of $$. Just hang onto it till you get the bucks!! And - if it falls through you can always relist. You know how to do it now!
