But your premise is fascinating and I want to put on a sociology helmet and conduct a study--how do you think this affects the nephews, if at all? I'll try to get some data from them for your study! I'll have to be kinda cagey about it, though, so they don't get their hackles up AGAIN about how mom refuses to pay for cable.

This is a dumb question, but does anyone remember an ancient mail merge program called Mailasaurus? I was discussing old software at work and no one else has heard of this, and I can't find any evidence of it on the internet. I used (or something with a similar name) in 1996 when I interned at a museum. I found this, chonies.

Does anyone know of a good free flv to mp4 converter? I'd like to convert some of my old videos so I can have them on my phone, but though Google gives me a lot of results there's no way to tell what works and what is going to install a ton of unmentioned extra stuff on my computer. The random link I clicked resulted in a virus warning.

I too would be very interested in any info anyone has on converting video to video. I can get things off Youtube into my ipod, but just the audio. Which is usually enough, but I would like some of the videos. Rummaging online for tutorials and advice just confused me. And I also found virus warnings.

I never found one that was free that was worth a crap, but I use the heck out of this: www.wondershare.com/pro/video-converter-ultimate.htmlto convert things to watch on the iPad during flights. A lifetime license is $50, but I have NEVER had it not be able to convert. Also, I use it to up the volume on Elementary, so I can understand Jonny Lee Miller's mumbling!

I found a review comparing free video converters and based on the descriptions I chose to try XMedia Recode. I was able to convert old videos to mp4 and play them on my phone, and so far it's seemed trustworthy, so if anyone needs a recommendation you could check out this converter.
I've always used Keepvid to download videos from YouTube, but recently I've been getting a lot of videoplayback.txt when I click the Keepvid links. Does anyone know how to fix that? Any recommendations of other safe options for YouTube downloads? I know about Savevid, but people have warned about installing the plugin it requires.

I use winff, which is just a frontend for ffmpeg that makes it easy to use (ffmpeg is a command line tool) to convert from avchd (.mts) to other formats. It takes awhile because it is only 32 bit (on multicore processors it will pin one of them) but it works pretty well.

My iTunes is not behaving and I need help. It's not deleting the podcasts I've played (which it's set to do), and when I set it to "three most recent unplayed episodes" it won't, nor five, nor one being the holy number. It also decided to dump the entire run of This American Life on to my iPod, most of which I've listened to; this is especially irritating because This American Life didn't update since January, and I've also unchecked it from the list of selected podcasts I even want on thingy.
Even when I try to manually shove particular episodes from assorted podcasts on, it doesn't always happen.
What I've done: obsessively checked the settings of each podcast I subscribe to; made sure my iTunes is up to date (possibly a mistake); and made plenty of room available on my iPod (7th gen nano, just a few months old). This last bit might be a problem--my previous nano died, and I migrated some of the subscriptions, and pruned the podcasts that are dead or I just don't listen to. I also gave the new iPod its own name, and...ugh. I just wanna listen to podcasts at work without having my iTunes spread out on four or five different devices.
I also Googled the problem, and found lots of griping on different forums, even go back several software updates, but no answers.
Why? Whyyyyy?
