My heart was pounding the entire time they were in the restaurant and I kept putting my fingers over my eyes, because I just knew SOMETHING was going to happen and then...nothing. Brilliant, but oh so goddamn annoying. So a big FU to David Chase for taking the pussy way out. I wanted more than one whacking. I wanted violence! I wanted blood! And most of all I wanted that little shit A.J. to get trapped in that SUV. I can't believe so much of that episode was focused on him. What a terrible ending for a fantastic show.

I'm actually lukewarm about it. I immediately screamed "I hate you!" at the screen when I realized that was the end, but I liked it more the more I thought about it. Still, wasn't a spectacular ending, but overall ok.
It was very interesting to watch this with a friend who has NEVER seen a Sopranos ep before. Try recapping all the relationships within an hour! Yikes!

I think this show has taught me not to waste my time with internet spoilers. Sure, they are fun to speculate on but in the end how many were accurate? No offense Abigail but few of the predictions in your last spoiler came true. Carmine and Paulie didn't become the heads of the families, AJ didn't blow up a grenade, the family wasn't holed up in a motel or anything. Really the only true one was that Phil was killed.
The spoilers did give me hope that this season would turn out to be more interesting than the last one but now I know that's not the case.
Also I thought the cat was named Paisano.

Um- I kind of like that it leaves it open. I like to believe that they are still out there living in NJ and the Soprano's are still doing their thing but my little window into it was closed. Mr. Greenapple thinks it sucked and wanted a lot of whacking but I think after the first minute of a rush if that happened you would end up let down/disappointed. JMO.

I think the ending is partly Chase giving a big F-you to the fans who complained there wasn't enough blood and violence on the show. Whackings are not an everyday occurrence in the mob. Sometimes life really does go on and people rarely change or learn a big "lesson."
After showing us what a sociopath Tony really is, Chase knew we'd be expecting some kind of comeuppance. I like that he didn't give into conventional expectations. I don't feel like I was owed anything.

Dragonflyeight - Oh yea, I can't help that . They shot four months/four episodes worth of film in that can for ONE ending. Chase picked and chose what he want to show and edited the episode that way FRANTIC and ERADIC. They knew most would end up on the cutting room floor because he was only doing a 61 min epi.
The ending that they cut from this particular alternative epi was that after the screen goes to black , they show Melfi sitting at her desk that next day , having coffe and reading the paper. The headline says " Mafia Crime Boss Soprano and Family Slain at Restaturant ".
So why did David Chase decide to leave that out ?? I guess he didn't want to wrap the series up in a tight little bow . Don't shoot the messenger , if you go back and start at my original spoilers for the last two episodes ( starting at page 38,41, ) , you'll see that most of the episode is there .

David Chase could've done a hell of a lot more with the ending of this show. Hell, why not make it a two hour series finale. If this would've been a SEASON finale, I would have no problem with it, but damnit when a series ends its run, I want some closure. Not a WTF? ending.
And I don't buy for a minute that he ended it this way to do a movie. This series aired on friggin' HBO! They can get away with all the violence, strong language, and nudity that they want. No need for a movie for all of that. David Chase just Punk'd every single Sopranos' viewer and I want to punch him in the throat.

Abigail, can I ask (without asking you to speicfically name names) where you came by this info? I've not seen anything anywhere else that jibes with this, and no offense, but it sounds like fanfic. But you were right about Donna Pescow!

I heard the cat's name as "Baciagalup," at least in that scene in which Tony calls him to give him food. That's what pops up when I turned on the CC. Is there another scene that someone calls on Paulie's furry nemesis?
And I agree that there was way too much AJ.
