Actually, I think she'd be legitimated by their subsequent marriage. I remember reading it once in a book. But, as she'd only be legitimated and not legitimate, she'd have no claim on any titles or entailed estates. In any case, as Edward abdicated (thereby removing himself and any issue from the line of inheritance), even if she managed to prove herself to be their child a thousand times over, she'd still have no claim on the throne. Of course, that's assuming that it's all true and that she's not batshit crazy.

I know John of Gaunt's children were legitimized as adults, but were barred from the throne. A more recent example is the 7th Earl of Harewood's son Mark Lascelles. His parents married after his father's divorce from his first wife, two years after his birth. He was not legitimated by his parent's marriage, and is not in line for the throne (if he were, he'd be 51st in line to the throne, I believe) or for the earldom.

After a course in Early Modern Europe that put emphasis on the Spanish side of things (our seminar leader has her doctorate in Spanish literature), I'm interested in the Portuguese monarchy. Anyone know of any good books for that? I know they were deposed, but do they still use titles? Are they still in Portugal?

Duarte Pio is the current pretender to the throne. He uses the title Duke of Braganza, and lives in Portugal since the descendants of the Portuguese royals aren't banned from the country anymore. His wedding a few years back was a pretty big deal. He has an official page. The only book I've read that touches on the Portuguese royals is The Struggle for Liberty in Brazil and Portugal by Neill Macaulay, but it's more about Pedro I who was both Emperor of Brazil and King of Portugal at the same time. When Pedro had to give up one of the thrones, he decided to abdicate the Portuguese throne to his daughter Maria and have his brother Miguel serve as her regent until she came of age. Of course, Miguel took the throne for himself, and war broke out. Duarte Pio is a descendant of both Pedro and Miguel. His mother is one of Pedro's descendants and his father is one of Miguel's descendants.

Thanks, Fraggle Rock! I've heard a bit about Catherine of Braganza, wife of Charles II. I think I'll go to a biography of him to find out more about her, though. The only thing in the campus library exclusively about her is a work of historical fiction from 1976 called The Portingale, and a bunch of microfilms.

Monkey, I'm not sure where in Louisiana you are, but word on the street is that Tulane has one of the best Iberian collections in the country. I've also heard that they're more into Spanish things, with the colonial stuff in the gulf, but still. See if you can use their library or look into inter-library loan.

Thanks for the tip, chonies! I'm going to check on an inter-library loan next semester.

Ohhhhh me too. I was obsessed, obsessed I tell you with the Romanov's in high school. This was when the crazy cat lady in Virginia was claiming to be the long-lost Romanov princess. You too? In high school I seriously entertained the thought of taking over Russia. I laugh at it now.
