I decided a few weeks ago to give this show a try and am now on my third viewing of season one. Since on Demand ended it this morning I will be heading out to buy the dvd this afternoon. How the hell do I always come late to a show and not get into it until it get's cancelled? Anyway, the acting on this show is amazing and every single performer should have gotten numerous awards IMO. I loved last night's episode and word to Calpurnia's response to that vile evil Sevilla. Loved it. Of course I am biased as I too am Team Atia all the way. My only complaint with what I know of Season Two is Octavian being recast. Max Pirkis is just beyond amazing and I am devastated that he won't be around until the end. Big mistake I think but I will give it a chance. Any hope at all for a season three?

According to Entertainment Weekly, there probably won't be because the series is very expensive to make.

While a part of mourns that Rome is so short-lived there's another part that's kind of glad that it will remain a small piece of brilliance rather than go the way of the Roman Empire and collapse under itself.

As an ancient history geek, I love seeing any depiction of Rome as it was; sprawling, messy, and with lots of color. Even when Octavian grows up and makes it a city of marble, lots of it was painted over in really bright colors, or made of colored stone.
Once again, we get cheated out of another amazing scene; I wasn't expecting "Friends, Romans, Countrymen..." but wanted to see how they'd depict Marc Antony whipping up the masses. Still, the guy in the pub retelling the story did help give the viewer the average Joe Public's (Publicus?) POV.
The sight of Vorenus and Pullo as the twin gods of vengence was chilling to see, even though Erastes had it coming. Leave the gladius, take the dormouse...

I was so excited for last night's premiere and it did not disappoint in the least. From Mark Antony masterfully playing on Brutus' shame and sense of honor in order to forge a "truce" to Octavian convincing Atia to stay by appealing to her power lust and rivalry with Servilia to watching Vorenus and Pullo exact their revenge on Erastes to weaselly Quintus meeting his end to Antony jokingly trying to get Atia's old female servant to have sex with him, I was on the edge of my seat the whole episode. Not only is it good television, but it's television done right.
What I like the most about the series is the male friendships, and it's not because of the HoYay factor, which I think is definitely in the subtext. I really like them because there is such an element of nobility and loyalty in them. The Vorenus/Pullo relationship has been the most obvious example, but in Season 1 there were a lot of little moments between Antony and Caesar that were extremely well done. I also like the nice little friendship Pullo and Octavian have developed, and how their conversation last night portends favorably for Pullo.
But hands down, my absolute favorite character is Atia. What a glorious bitch she is! I'll absolutely cry if Servilia ends up besting her.
My one minor quibble with the series is how claustrophobic some of the sets seem. I appreciate that they were trying to achieve a realistic rustic quality as ancient Rome was a very dirty, smelly city, but the sets just seem like they're closing in on the actors. And I cannot stand all the interior shots that were so obviously faked to look like they were filmed outside. Despite the fact that the series cost a lot of money to produce, there have been very few scenes that look like they were filmed on a scale worthy enough for the subject matter.

Yes, he is. The kitchen slut lucked out.
I love seeing Pullo and Vorenus kicking ass together. Atia is my favorite. You could see the wheels turning in her head after Octavian mentioned the money.

Do any of you think there's any possibility that Lucius's daughters are still alive? Like maybe forced into slavery?

Last night was just FULL of the man on man kissing. And, uhm, I don't really remember much else. Sorry, it was that darn "I totally hooked up with guys back in school" interview that Purefoy just did in Out that made me focus on such things. That and seeing him in person looking very very hot. Since I'm not the biggest fan, spitting in Servilia's face was definitely a highlight. They now have NEW new posters around town with profile shots and character-specific taglines. Hers is something like: "Revenge helps calm the pain of betrayal." Antony's is "Arrogance tarnishes the reputation of a leader." My one complaint was that it seemed a bit too "modern" in some places, like the barguy's account and "bollocks" and the like. I know it's accepted that all ancient peoples were, in fact, British. But come on. Me too. But by "somebody," I mean "Ray Stevenson himself." It was odd seeing Pullo all sweet and domestic last night. Sigh. So I just moved in with my friend and she doesn't have cable! Fortunately, her building has a huge plasma in the lounge. People better KNOW that we own it on Sundays for this and Battlestar. Because otherwise, there will be some Vorenus and Pullo-style violence going on. My friend is *convinced* this is the case. Her idea is that in a few episodes, he'll hear things that will make him suspect that they're still alive and he'll totally have to go on a quest to find them.

I think the choice to have Barguy speak in a Cockney-ish (?) accent was to convey the class differences in Roman society, which was very stratified.
I also cracked up a little at the town crier's "air spanking" gesture he did with the mention of Gaius (air spank) Julius (air spank) Caesar (air spank).
