Shamelessly excited about this show. Premieres on August 28th on HBO.
Ciaran Hinds, James Purefoy, Polly Walker, Lindsay Duncan..... men in togas, sex, violence and ancient history...what more do you want??!!

August 28th -- I'll have to remember that. I'm fascinated by ancient Greek, Roman, Byzantine history/culture. So, I'm so there! Is the show going to be based on real people? I don't mind if it's not perfectly accurate, cuz a lot of the time, historians disagree on how stuff went down anyway. And a little creativity is what made "I, Claudius" soooo good. I just hope it's entertaining!

Well, I heard ABC's Empire was obscenely inaccurate, so it will be easy to beat on that level. I think that we can never be too sure of exactly what happened 2000-ish years ago anyways. Why should a TV show be accurate if it's not presenting itself as a documentary or absolute historical fact? Just because it's set it the past? I think the writers of Deadwood do an intriguing job of blending real people, historical events, likely possibilities and dramatic license. I may not be witnessing true events but I sure as hell feel as though I am transported to a different time and place, which is what I hope Rome accomplishes. I also strongly suspect TWoP will recap it, which should make things entertaining.
My friend is obsessed with "I Claudius," so I do wonder what she'll think of this. Does HBO plan to make this a multi-season series or is it designed for the short term? The network is kinda having a freakout right now with SATC gone, SFU soon gone, Entourage has buzz but not enough ratings, etc. I hope they have some success with this -- as it cost about 100 mil to make (for a TV show w/o huge names? damn!), so much that it had to be coproduced with the BBC and Italy. Is location shooting that expensive? Did they rebuild the entire colliseum? I miss Italy. And Italian men/actors are hot. God, I need something entertaining after the somber SFU ends. I think HBO is running "making of" specials if you want to see how they're doing on history and such.
Oh man, you guys weren't kidding about the horrible IMDB boards. I can't believe people like that actually exist. There's not only a thread entitled "Any man on man action?" but a post that defies logic.

Just saw that TWoP will be recapping "Rome". Should be interesting over there.

I didn't watch on Sunday night. I dunno, it just doesn't intrigue me that much. But I was a late bloomer for Deadwood and now its one of my favorite shows. So maybe I'll give it a chance.
