Does anyone know what happened to the Cigarette Smoking Man?

Now I'm wondering about him. He was my favorite character. I remember an episode where Skinner said he got shot and died but I seem to recall he came back after that, although I gave up on this show before the end so I'm not sure.

I thought he reappeared in the final ep, but was blown up??? Its all a vague memory now.

I disagree. The Xfiles should have ended in that moment when Scully said "I'm pregnant". What a perfect setup for a new movie.

Instead we got season 8 and 9, and the complete and total destruction of what the Xfiles used to be.

Yep, the show should have ended when Scully revealed she was pregnant, and Mulder was abducted. That could have easily been resolved in a 2-hour movie, and it wouldn't have seemed quite as jump-the-shark-y (sorry to pull out a TWoP phrase, guys). That was clearly the beginning of the end, and I agree with Casino Bride that it's unfair for Doggett to get the blame for the show sucking because given the setup for seasons 8 & 9, it could have been much, much worse.

I actually really like some of S9, I thought there were really interesting episodes mixed in there, and a lot of the final ones were quite sad and beautiful. Any season has its lame episodes, and although I didn't expect to like Doggett I respected the fact that he had Scully's back. I liked the friendship that Doggett and Reyes formed, even though I didn't like her much.

Of course, Scully was pretty much superfluous to the final season and a lot of the dragging in and out of Scully and Mulder in the last two was ridiculous.

CSM was always coming back from the dead, but last we saw him he was burning alive in bomb blasts. It'd be pretty hard to recover from, especially when he was pretty ancient and sick already.

My last memory of CSM is my beloved Krycek pushing him down some stairs. I thought he'd died then, but I guess I was wrong!

That was my last memory of CSM too, when Krycek and Marita(?) pushed him down the stairs. I was kind of sick of him by the end. The sight of CSM meant there was mythology crap coming up, and I couldn't really be bothered with any of that.

Damn, I forgot about Marita. Now that you mention it, I do remember them pushing CSM down the stairs (or, as Krycek put it in his Krycek way, "sending the devil back to hell!") but what the hell happened to her afterwards? Didn't she turn blue from some tests they were running on her or something?

Oh, yeah...and what about Spender (CSM's son)? So many characters, so many loose ends...
