I like Shota but that story about his drive in dish, where he serves essentially his dead dog on a stick? Yikes. I think it was Gail who commented "well, that was dark" and she couldn't have been more accurate. Every year the chefs get prickly at the more "every man" challenges because they think too highly of themselves and I'm like "have you never watched this show?" At this point it's like showing up without a couple of dessert recipes in your repertoire.

At this point it's like showing up without a couple of dessert recipes in your repertoire. I know! Some of them have been so snotty about desserts and acting like it's beneath them. Even Tom has told them at least once that every savory chef should know how to make at least one dessert. One thing I did like about the drive-in was that the judges seemed to be a lot more animated with their comments, I'm assuming because the chefs were all so far away from them there was no way they could hear them.

I’m really enjoying this season. I really like all the chefs. Padma and the returning contestants as guest judges—also great!
But Tom? That hat? I mean...is he going through something? Missing his youth? New young girlfriend?

I really liked Avishar's s'mores-type dish for the drive-in challenge. It was a good combination of working with the theme + creating something I really wanted to eat. I was fully team Colicchio on that one, lol.

Sorry to double post. Can I just say how much I LOVE SHOTA??? Really hoping he wins it all, although I actually love all three finalists and would genuinely be happy with whoever wins.

I would be thrilled with either Dawn or Shota, and fine with Gabe, though I've been cooling on him lately.
I live right next to the Chesapeake Bay and crabs are practically a religion here. To me, crabs are supposed to be messy. If you're not completely covered in Old Bay to the point where you need to shower after eating, then you haven't really had crabs. So I'm sure that Shota's dish was delicious and he deserved to win, but my biased self would have died to try Dawn's dish.
Though I'm sure Dungeness crabs have their own culture surrounding them, I'm not sure if they're supposed to be a fancier ingredient. Chesapeake Bay blue crabs can be fancy too, a jumbo lump crab cake can put quite the hole in your wallet. But again, I feel like eating them steamed on a plastic tablecloth covered picnic bench with hushpuppies and beer just feels *right*.

I think that Shota has been the most consistent and solid, therefore he's my pick to win. But I like Dawn so much as a person that I'd be very happy with her too. I think she's getting a fair rap for the number of times she's been missing something on a plate - clearly she should have improved with her time management by now. That said, just knowing that she's skated by that many times with incomplete dishes does say a lot about just what a great chef she is.

Yeah, I feel bad for Dawn that her time management issues have haunted her all season, but damn if her food doesn't look absolutely delicious. I don't think there's been one dish she made this season that I wouldn't happily eat.

Anyone watch the finale? I was so disappointed that once again Dawn left elements of her dish off her plate!!!
It was quite surprising to learn the news about Gabe & his firing given that he's been fronting like a family man all season. I'm guessing he won't be invited back to future Top Chef series like so many other previous winners & contestants are.
