I haven’t watched the episode yet (so I realize I enter this thread at my own risk ) but I actually think it’s kind of bs that the judges say they are judging on that night alone. Maybe they think they are, but it’s just not how human brains work. And although I admittedly can’t recall specific examples off the top of my head, I am almost certain they have evoked that rule to eliminate chefs who aren’t little white boys more often than the reverse. I should say, the bit about judging on one night vs. overall performance wasn't really a point of discussion with the judges. It's more one of the reasons people are using to defend the person who went home. Also, while I'm definitely not going to defend Top Chef's overall record in this regard, there haven't been any white boys in the group since Luke went out a few episodes ago.

I have to say out of all the chefs left I'm rooting for Buddha to win. There's a lot of whimsy to how he approaches the challenges but everything is grounded in wide-ranging technique. We'll see how it goes though because as we've seen it only takes one fucked up challenge to send you home no matter how good you are.

The finale was lovely. My fave didn’t win but after watching the episode, I’m really pleased with the outcome!

Yay, Buddha!
Out of all the concepts I thought that Sarah's was the most cohesive and interesting but fell through in the execution. Too bad. Evelyn was doing such a great job leading up to the finale. Her concept and food was solid but just didn't shine. It's always nice for the hometown favourite to win so that would have been fabulous to see. I was rooting for Buddha so I was happy to see him take home the win.

Wow just realized I never offered everyone the benefit of my Finale Take I was rooting for Evelyn, but certainly couldn't argue with Buddha's win. Loved seeing Eric back as a judge, he's just so great. Evelyn's is still the the chef whose restaurant I want to go to the most.

I recently rewatched all the previous seasons. In season 1, Tiffany made a Stuffed Pumpkin with Pasta dish that looked and sounded amazing- does anyone know where I might find the recipe? I tried every search term I could think of, and even Pinterest failed me.
And a question I would to ask Tom- has anyone in the entire history of the show set out to make a semi-fredo, or is that just code for 'my panne cotta didn't set?'

Did anyone watch the premiere last night? What do we think of Kristen as Padma's replacement? Will we miss kooky hat guy? And I'm already rooting for the hot Mexican guy with the pozole.
I kept reminding myself throughout the episode that I need to give Kristen a chance, because all I could think about what how she's not Padma. Padma, as harsh of a judge as she could be, had more warmth and was a bit more natural as a host. Kristen by contrast seemed a little stiff. But again, I need to give her a chance, it's just the first episode.
My husband said something funny when comparing the two. He said they both are scary in their own ways. Padma is scary in a Regina George kind of way, you know she'll mock absolutely everything about you the second you leave the room. Kristen is scary too, but that's more because she seems like she could kick your ass.

I watched! I'm waiting to judge Kristen as the host for a couple of reasons. I think that she deserves some time to get comfortable in the role. I also think that they designed the first episode to have Tom and Gail with her through the whole thing to help her out. Until we get to see her hosting on her own, it's hard to tell what her approach will be.
