I felt sorry for Letizia on her wedding day. It bored with rain, the little wedding attendants acted like assholes and Froilan actually got up and kicked some poor girl, Felipe looked bored, and the groom's family looked depressed. Letizia looked kind of overwraught and nervous...not very happy at all.

I think you are right about the monarchy after JC is gone. I think it lasts today because people really respect JC. I think that Felipe will have to prove himself. I think he will have a hard time holding on.

I've never really been interested in Letizia simply because she does not show a lot of personality. However, after reading the above comments I feel badly for her. So, wanting to know a little bit more about her, I went on another board and read that the Spanish royal web site just updated its website to include her. That sucks. Good luck to Letizia. I hope Felipe supports her and stands up for her.

Juan Carlos is a notorious womanizer. The rumour is that his and Sofia's marriage has been "in name only" for quite some time. She was born royal - she probably grew up with the idea that she would just have to do her duty...I think much the same way that Anne Marie puts up with Constantine's womanizing. As far as Letizia producing an heir, it may not be as pressing as one would think. I have a feeling that, once Juan Carlos dies, the Spanish monarchy will not have a terribly long life ahead of it. I never knew Mr. Constantine was a womanizer himself! How interesting. I knew about JC- Sofia had actually tried to leave him when their children were very young, but she couldn't, apparently because she had nowhere to go. Her brother couldn't support her and neither could her mother, or something like that. So she stayed. I agree with you about the monarchy in Spain....I don't think it'll be around for much longer. Same, IMO, in the Netherlands.

Apparently when they left Greece, Constantine also brought his mistress with him. I think that, generally speaking, it's safe to assume that most of the kings and other royal males have had mistresses.
I'm surprised that Sofia couldn't leave JC - you'd think she'd get a nice divorce settlement if she did. I would have thought a bigger problem would have been the kids- I doubt that she could have just taken them with her, especially w/ F being heir to the throne and all.
As far as the various European royal houses go, I think they're all on their way out - some are just going to exit stage-left faster than others. I think the British monarchy will hang around the longest, but eventually it will go, too. I mean, these are all developed countries that also have elected governments and, as it is, it seems that, to varying extents, the monarchy is on the decline in all of the european countries that have it - although obviously the monarchy is more popular in some countries than in others. I think that as time goes on Europe is just going to become more and more democratic - I don't foresee any major political or social events that could occur which would turn the decline around.

What's Letizia's relationship like w/ the rest of the family. She seems to get on okay w/ Sofia - but how about the rest? Is it true that Felipe's sisters and their husbands hate Letizia?
Also - I read somewhere that Elena and her husband had a bad marriage and that he was a drug addict or something? Anyone know anything about this?

I don't konw whether Elena's husband is a drug addict. But there ahve been plenty or rumours that the marriage is bad. I'm always hearing that they're on the verge of divorce. They're still married, though - so who knows. They should try to stay away from scandal, though - unless Letizia produces an heir, Froilan is in line to inherit the throne.

I've heard that Elena and her husband were very opposed to Letizia's and Felipe's marriage while Cristina supported the marriage. I've seen pictures of the engagement announcement where Elena looks like she is going to cry and not from happiness. Also - I read somewhere that Elena and her husband had a bad marriage and that he was a drug addict or something? Anyone know anything about this? I've heard that they have a bad marriage too. I don't know whether or not he is a drug addict, but he did have a stroke and supposedly as a result he has severe mood swings which makes him hard to live with.

How old is he? When did he have a stroke? You can't tell it by looking at him. I've heard he's a bit of a jerk. Isn't he really mean to Leti or something?

According to an article posted on TRF Jaime was born April 7, 1963, so he is only 41 years old. Not very old to have had a stroke. And actually, he looks older than 41 to me too. I would have guessed that he was at least 10 years older. Maybe it is the cloak he always wears.
He was very vocal about his disapproval of Letizia at least at first so I can imagine he wasn't very nice to her in private either.
