This crown p has got a lot of buzzing about her. Several of the boards seem to gossip about her in unflattering ways. I understand the Juan Carlists being dismayed, but the story of her first husband leaving his wife when he was smitten with a 16 year old student Letizia is tantalizing. Couple this with a 6 month courtship before Felipe's proposal and it makes a girl wonder "what is it that the vixen Letizia has that makes men weak in the knees"?
Anyone else notice in the engagement pictures and the wedding pictures where mama Sofia has a tight grip on Felipes left hand, while his other clutches his wifes.

I've never heard a story about her first husband leaving his wife and kids for Letizia. Whats with that? Although I do have to say that if he was old enough to have a wife and kids and she was only 16 then my first thought is that he is an asshat who deserted his wife and kids to take advantage of a minor. Something scares me about a supposed adult who would rather go out with a young girl rather than another adult. To me, it says more about him than her.

Remember his father had to marry his mother not out of love but out of duty. An equal marriage was expected. tatiana of Lichenstien was favoured by the queen, apparently not by Felipe. So the expectations of him were to do his duty and have an equal marriage. I.e. an aristocrat or HRH. Failing that a woman with no past. i.e not divorced or a single mother. So a Masako, Alexandra or Maxima type girl. This is kind of odd, when you look at who Felipe's sisters married. Jaime, Elena's husband, is an aristocrat but is also supposed to be a real asshat. The marriage ain't a happy one. Cristina, meanwhile, married a professional handball player from the Basque province. I would think that there'd be little pressure for Felipe to marry another royal, and that they would be happy with a commoner with no past.

Remember Fishstick? I wonder what Sofia might have thought about her joining the family! I think the same reason Queen Elizaeth II hasn't. Duty, respectability, and wanting to represnt stability. Sofia has been born and bred to do her duty, and if she doesn't like it, to deal with it the best way she can. I believe that Spain, Britain, and the Neatherlands will ultimately survive. It depends on whether or not this generation of royals measure up. Meaning they do their duty to their country and do it with class. If William, Victoria, and various others do it right and pick the right consorts, (not aristocratic, but responsible people who know what they are getting into) then things will move smoothly. Felipe has picked someone who seems colorless, but she's not causing a huge scandal after another and acting trashy, nor do her relatives who aren't even royal (i.e. Mette Marit's father, or Mary Donaldson's accused, cousin is it?) but can still cause embarrasment regardless. As long as Letiza does not go insane or get an eating disorder, things'll be fine I'm sure. Besides, the Spanish royals are a bit more careful about who they choose. Not to mention that Felipe was probably influenced ultimately by his father and mother. They would have also let him marry Letizia since she understands how a public figure should act. For her I imagine that it's the same public lifestyle, just a different personal lifestyle (palaces, protocol, pay! ;D, and title). But still, ultimately, things could still go wrong. Worst has been done I'm sure by others . Her father at least isn't prancing around with a stripper. As for the car issue, she's still not used to certain procedures I'm sure. Besides, with all the hoopla that always surrounds them, it can have a disorientating effect. I agree! She has a classy air to her, unlike Mary who acts more like a wannabe Hollywood starlet with the thick makeup and magazine covers. She's not doing more than she can handle at the moment. Letizia is taking her time. She's still adjusting to being a royal princess. She's also not trying to compete with Felipe for press coverage and adulation. The competition Diana started when she started to try to get all the compliments and attention is what drove Charles and her apart (among other things) and destabilized the monarchy.

Perhaps you could comment on this in the Diana thread? I'd say she and Charles were never together in the first place, with him being most to blame for that, and the "born" British monarchs sure managed to do a lot more destabilizing themselves. Letizia is beautiful, but that was one cold wedding.

Jaime, Elena's husband, is an aristocrat but is also supposed to be a real asshat. Because I risk a virtual beating if I say this on the GREMB, I have to get this long-festering snark off my chest here: Elena and Jaime are the fuggin' fugliest royal couple. Whew! That felt good! ETA: Congrats Letizia and Felipe!

I understand, luckymurre.
Especially since Jaime had his drug-overdose heart attack some years ago.

What a luck that this little spider-thin creature is pregnant! A lot of royal babies are on their way now! Good for the magazines and for them because they can have lots of fun together in the future!
