And the title of the fourth episode this year is "51." Last year, in one of the final episodes, Walt said that he had "lived under the threat of death for a year now." So I've been thinking that season five begins about one year after Walt first got his diagnosis.

Who's to say that 52 is his real age in this flash-forward? He shows a fake ID so it could just be the date of that birthday, not his real one.

There was an article out this week saying that AMC had originally wanted either Matthew Broderick or John Cusack for the part of Walt. Now I can't imagine anyone but Bryan Cranston in that part but those two seem especially weird choices. I know Broderick played a put-upon bitter teacher in Election but I just can't see him bringing the rage and arrogance that Cranston is capable of.

Cusack, I could kind of see, but Broderick no way. I think it worked much better to have a believably 50 year old guy try to take charge of the trainwreck of his life (albeit in a messed up way) than say, a 41 or 45 year old facing the same crisis (Cusack and Broderick's respective ages at the time BB first premiered.)

Cranston seems like the right choice now that we've seen his awesomeness but when the show was first announced, I'd guess most people were like "The wacky dad who did pratfalls on 'Malcolm in the Middle' is going to play a meth cook in a gritty cable drama? Umm... what?!" or "Wasn't he Tim Watley, Seinfeld's dentist?" He didn't make any more sense than Broderick or Cusack.

Cranston was on an episode of The X-Files (where I'm guessing he met Vince Gilligan) pre-Malcolm in the Middle, and it was a very gritty role. I remembered him from that when MitM started and was stunned to see him playing a wacky sitcom dad. So, to me, he made sense for BB. The guy has an eclectic resume.

I can't imagine either of them in this part, and I have an active dislike of Cusack based on some of his past douchy behavior. (See his thread!) This show has incredible casting AND acting. I can't imagine anybody else playing Walt. That's my personal litmus test for creation of an unforgettable character. I really hope that Aaron Paul can go on to have a great career after this. He's one of a very few young actors I see who seems to be the total package -- looks, talent, charisma, commitment, and (reasonable) intelligence. I'm trying to avoid micro-dissecting that flash-forward. If I've learned nothing else from watching BB it's that things are rarely what they seem. One lingering question I have is why Walt would hang around ABQ after obtaining a fake identity? He's got to get out of dodge pretty quick if he's on the run. There would be former students who would recognize him. Half the DEA knows him. He's got too many ties to ABQ. I can only guess that he needs to do something with that arsenal before disappearing.

I just learned this, like yesterday, and it kinda blows my mind. He's a versatile guy. Weird Al tweeted today that he finds BB more entertaining if he pretends it's a prequel to Malcolm in the Middle. Walt has a lobotomy and remarries while in the witness protection program. False memories include lots of rollerskating. In other BB news - I'm house/dog sitting for the next week, and I'm super-pissed that these people have Dish, which recently dropped AMC. Dammit, dammit, dammit. Thank goodness I can get it on demand at home when I get back.

Show got a ton of Emmy nominations today including best actor for Bryan Cranston (of course), best supporting actor for Aaron Paul and Giancarlo Esposito and best supporting actress for Anna Gunn. I thought Paul was amazing last season but I would love to see Esposito win just because Paul already won once and will get another opportunity next year where as Esposito won't have a chance again with Breaking Bad. And he was brilliant too. I'm also really happy to see Mark Margolis (Tio Salamanca) get a best guest actor nomination. I have liked him since his Oz days and he did so much on Breaking Bad with just his face and that bell.

I'm happy Vince Gilligan was nominated for directing the season finale, it was one of the best hours of television ever.
