That was my point. Saul William's album I picked up and just loved it instantly. Mos Def's I have had for months and I'm just not feeling it. The impression left is as if Mos is just faking the funk - or rather faking the rock theme in in this case. Saul Williams' style seems effortless and natural - even though some may still label it avant guarde he pulls it off and simply does it better. Mos really did seem to be saying "Look at me. I've got the rock on my album. I am an artiste!! dammit!".

Common! "Be"
Discuss.
I think it picks up where LWFC left off....and I was so lukewarm on the mp3's...but things always sound better to me in final CD form. Welcome back home, Common.
I read on another board that he's poised to move 250k this week (or in first two weeks out)

Foxfair, the "prison" line was from Office Space. I know that's old news, but I had to say something. I love that movie! Anyway....
I've been wearing that Common CD out since the day I burned got it! Although I think that Electric Circus was pretty dope in its own way, Be is the hottest CD of the year, hands down. It's perfect except for one thing: whywhyWHY didn't they re-record "The Food?" Granted, Common and Kanye did a great job performing it on Chappelle's Show, but there's something jarring about the way they just slapped that version on there. Otherwise, a 9.5 from me.

I'm really glad someone else replied to this post.

I don't really know of any good hip hop these days. I listen to my old stuff from high school, which some of you may find crap, but basically: DMX, Jay Z, Foxy Brown, Tupac, Lost Boyz. Is there any reccommendations for anything new or old that I might like. I want to expand my musical horizons. (and I just got an iPod and want to download some new tunes )

You don't have to use "white" as a shield. Hiphop is for everyone!
There's not much of a difference. I think some use rap as the music and hiphop as more encompassing urban culture. Some musical snobs use rap for the music that pleases the masses (i.e. 50 Cent, Jay-Z, whoever else is on the radip) and hiphop for that oh-so-high artform of beats and rhymes (i.e. The Roots, Def Jux, or Kweli...Mos Def)
I think it's about the same thing.

I am just discovering how great k-os is and I saw him live tonight. Great stuff, is he popular in the States too or just up here in Canada. I really like Man I Used to Be, and well the whole Joyful Rebellion album. Would you say he's similar to some of the artists mention in this thread (The Roots, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, or anyone?) I really like the combination of styles and the fact that he's not rapping about money, bitches and benzes.

I got a recommended album and liked it a lot. I have to admit it wasn't this thread that pointed me to it but the past "HipHop Speak Ya Piece" thread from the other place. Yes I delayed for months but whoever recommended it if you still lurk here I have to tell you it was worth it and thanks very much. Loved it.
Can't be many true hiphop heads lurking. This thread is always dormant on the back pages unless the regular PETA protestors start harping on it.
Now to pose the eternal question is always "Is hiphop dead?". Well on this thread it sure is.
Now move along......ain't nothing to see.

This might be a stupid question, but what's the difference between rap and hip-hop? I always see them listed together and I'm clueless... and white. I think that rap is only an aspect of hip-hop. Many would argue that hip-hop has four elements: MCing, Graffiti, Bboying and DJing. I've heard artists describe hip-hop as a way of life as well. I'm no expert, but when I consider it's origins, I'm inclined to agree.
