Maybe this should go in the TV thread, but did anyone watch the VH1 Hip-Hop Honors show last night? I thought Big Daddy Kane killed it. Ice T and Snoop were pretty good, too. The Roots are off the chain, as always. Why is it every time Biggie Smalls gets anything, Puffy has to be there to steal the glory? And why the hell did Kanye West have to perform "Golddigger"? Who invited him?
All in all I thought it was a well produced show, the performances were good. One of the better award type shows geared toward hip-hop. *I'm rolling my eyes at you Source Awards and stupid BET*.
Any thoughts?

Now to pose the eternal question is always. Is hiphop dead? No, I see it has taking a rest, letting the little kiddies play for a while. 50 cent, Nelly, and all those other jokers are on their way out. People are starting to see while they make a good dance song, when it comes to the street hiphop, they just don't cut it. I miss you Wu-tang Clan.

Why is it every time Biggie Smalls gets anything, Puffy has to be there to steal the glory? Just a conspiracy theory. . . Maybe Puffy had Biggie knocked off just so he could profit from his death. Think about it. That's when his career really blew up, and given the timing, it would look like retaliation for Tupac. Am I going to hell for that?

I agree with you. If Biggie were still alive, we probably wouldn't know who the hell Diddy is today. Remember back in the video "Big Poppa" (I think that's the one), Diddy was just another random, insignificant face in the hot tub. I laugh every time I see that video, because his "big" part was to say "Maybe, your friends can get with my friends, and then, we can be friends. Is that alright? Is that alright wit chu?" The fuck?! The girl he was saying that to in the video looked so annoyed.
Does anyone remember that video or am I just crazy?

I remember it. The woman Puff is telling that to is Misa Hylton-Brim, the mother of his first son Justin. She's the woman responsible for Lil' Kim's purple pasty.

Just caught a replay of Hip Hop Honors -- I was off the couch and screaming when Kane went into his old routine! His whole set was great, including Common breakin. The weakest link was that mush mouth T.I. -- You must enunciate to flow like Kane dammit! And that in a nutshell is my problem with a lot of current rappers. I feel like an old woman listening to this sh*t because I can't understand half the words. Rappers of my generation read books (Kool Moe Dee, Chuck D, KRS-1 -- where you at?) and when I listen to these new school jokers it's apparent that they are allergic to books, english is a second language and communication is not the goal. I miss hip hop.

Diddy. He's his own punch line.
My hip-hop knowledge is supremely limited, but I'm going to start attending hip-hop school in this thread! I downloaded "Gold Digger." And "Hey Mama." I have most of Eminem's work. At least I do own one KRS-One song and a little Public Enemy. I need lessons, people! Especially if anything on eMusic is worth listening to, since I have a subscription.

I still think there are good/great artists making good/great hip hop. Diddy, Fiddy etc you can raffle. I'm sick of Lil Jon, Ludicris etc. We get it - dirty south. Wah.
Some of my favourites include: Lyrics Born, The Streets, M.I.A, Miss Dynamite, Blackalicious, Ugly Duckling, Jurassic Five, Dilated Peoples, Roots Manuva, Dangermouse, Pharcyde, Estelle, Northern State, Madvillian/MF Doom, DJ Shadow, OutKast, Mos Def, Rahzel, The Roots, The Avalanchers, Katalyst, Common, Neneh Cherry. Plus all the other usual suspects...NWA, PE, Grand Master Flash, Fugees, Lauren Hill, (before the crazy became exposed) Disposable Heros of Hiphoprisy, Rock Steady Crew, 2 live Crew, A Tribe Called Quest, Missy Elliot, Ice T, Ice Cube, Salt n Pepa, some NERD & of course De La Soul & Run DMC.

So true, but I went through the last few years the same way Rev Run did (according to that Time mag article about Kanye West) listening to rock and a lot of classics (Public Enemy, Whodini, A Tribe Called Quest, etc). The only rap CD I bought in 2003 was Talib Kweli's "Quality Music" (still love it!) I've been scared to buy because I didn't want to be disappointed and out $15 bucks. I'm planning to buy Common and the new Kanye ("Through the Wire" got on my damn nerves) and also checking out some of the others mentioned up thread.
